Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kirk Downs

Team Effort Leads Bisons To Season-Opening Win

NEW ORLEANS, La. –  The Lipscomb men's basketball team opened its 2020-21 campaign with a 76-73 win over Lamar at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse in the Tulane Classic Saturday evening.

The Bisons (1-0) put four in double figures, led by 15 points from junior Ahsan Asadullah and senior Romeao Ferguson. Despite having to shake off some rust in the first half, the team shot 55.6 percent from the floor, marking the highest percentage for Lipscomb in a season opener in the last decade.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a Lamar triple opened the game, Asadullah scored back-to-back buckets and Ferguson followed with a jumper to put the Bisons on top for the first time at 6-5. Carson Cary sank the team's first trey and scored five of Lipscomb's next 11 points to push the lead to 17-12 at the 9:40 mark.

Lamar regained the lead with a quick 6-0 run before the sides began trading makes the remainder of the half. Five lead changes over the final five minutes sent the teams into the break tied, 30-30.

Asadullah led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, going 5-of-8 from the floor, while Cary went 3-for-3 to add seven.

The Bisons put their foot on the gas to open the second half as all five starters scored during an 11-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Greg Jones and Alex Jones. Following another quick burst from the Cardinals to make it a one-possession game, Lipscomb caught fire from behind the arc. Cary and Greg Jones combined to nail four triples in leading the Bisons on a 20-5 spurt that opened their lead to 17 points at 63-46 with 8:55 to play.

Lamar began chipping away at the deficit and eventually got it back to single digits with just under four minutes on the clock, forcing the Bisons to try and seal the game at the free throw line. However, the visitors from Music City failed to put the game away after missing 10 free throws in the final 48 seconds. The Cardinals eventually pulled to within two after Quinlan Bennett's jumper with 23 seconds.

Jake Wolfe and Ferguson managed to sink enough to keep the Bisons on top for good.
