Men's Basketball Runs Out Of Gas Late, Falls To Cincinnati
12/2/2020 9:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Lipscomb men's basketball team had its biggest test of the young season on Wednesday at Cincinnati, where the Bisons led for nearly 30 minutes, but were unable to hang on down the stretch. Ultimately, the Bearcats pulled out the 67-55 victory in their season opener at Fifth Third Arena.
Greg Jones and Romeao Ferguson each tallied team-highs with 12 points and were the only Bisons in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb came out of the gate ready to jump on a Cincinnati (1-0) team who had not played a game this year. The plan worked early as the Bisons attacked and got to the free throw line, sinking seven attempts before Greg Jones buried the game's first triple at the 10:23 mark to give Lipscomb its largest lead of the night, 19-10. A full-court pass from Ahsan Asadullah to Parker Hazen for a dunk on the other end jumpstarted the run.
After the Bearcats managed to tie the game up, Jones nailed his second triple to put Lipscomb back in front. They would hold that advantage until Rapolas Ivanauskas made a layup to give Cincinnati its first lead (27-26) since going up 2-0.
A few seconds later Ferguson found Jake Wolfe in the left corner for a wide-open three with seven seconds before half. UC would drive to the other end and lay up a bucket at the buzzer to send the game to halftime, tied 29-29.
A fast start in the second half saw the purple and gold race out to a 43-34 lead in the first six minutes after stringing together a 14-5 run behind eight points from Ferguson.
With Lipscomb already shorthanded, things got tougher for the Bisons down the stretch when Hazen fouled out with 9:03 remaining. Lipscomb was in control 47-42 at the time. From that point forward, Cincinnati began taking control and mounted a 25-8 run to close the game and seal the win.
