Men's Basketball's Malcolm Montgomery: Where Are They Now?

He came to Lipscomb from nearby Gallatin (TN) High School, a prized recruit who stepped into a Bison Basketball program at the top of its game. Malcolm Montgomery graduated four years later with 1,303 points and a nod as one of the best driving point guards in Bison history. He’s now a teacher in his hometown and married with two daughters. We learned about his teammates, campus memories and family when he sat down this week with LipscombSports.com.

What years did you compete for Lipscomb?

I played basketball for Coach Don Meyer from 1991-1995.

What teammates were most memorable?

All of my teammates were special because it was an honor to play basketball and share my college experience with such a great group of guys.

What degrees have you earned?

I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation from Lipscomb in 1995, and I added a Master's Degree in Education from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2003.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

Lipscomb was a great fit for me because of great academics and a great basketball program, and it was close to my home town so my family could watch me play.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

My best memories were the games against Belmont (Battle of the Boulevard). We won some and we lost some, but it was always a great game with lots of crazy fans.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

The coaching staff was my greatest influence. We had some of the best coaches in the nation and they pushed me everyday. More importantly, I knew they loved me.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

I remember hanging out in the Student Center and on the steps after Chapel, and I’ll never forget the fun times in High Rise Dorm.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

My best lesson is one I’ve thought of many times since college – how being around special people who are committed to excellence will make you raise your standards in all areas of your life.

Who were your favorite professors?

All of my professors taught me lots so I really didn't have a favorite. They were all special in their own ways.

What do you do now?

I teach Physical Education at Guild Elementary School (K-5) in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Tell us about your family:

I’m married to my beautiful wife of 19 years, J'Rema Robinson-Montgomery, and we have two daughters: Jeremia (16) and Jevonna (11).

Do you have a favorite Bible scripture?

Yes, my favorite is Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
