NASHVILLE – Two Lipscomb athletics programs earned Public Recognition by the NCAA on Tuesday after scoring in the Top-10 percent of the most recent Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR).
Lipscomb's men's tennis and volleyball programs were among nearly 1,400 teams nationally to earn the awards based on their most recent multi-year APRs, which include the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. The list includes 881 women's teams and 499 men's or mixed teams.
Men's tennis earns its second Top-10 recognition in program history (2005-06), while volleyball makes its inaugural appearance on the list. Overall, Lipscomb has seen its department recognized 27 times since becoming a full Division I member in 2004.
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,380, up by 52 from the previous academic year, largely due to an increase in squads with perfect scores. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,266, an increase of 52 teams from last year.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The ASUN Conference had 28 programs garner top-10 percent honors with UNF and FGCU leading the way with five each. They both were recognized in the same sports (Men's Tennis, Women's Basketball, Women's XC, Women's Golf, Women's Tennis).
Kennesaw State (Women's VB, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Tennis) and NJIT (Men's XC, Women's VB, Women's Tennis) each had three programs recognized with Lipscomb (Men's Tennis, Women's VB), Liberty (Women's VB, Women's XC), Stetson (Men's XC, Beach VB) and Coastal Carolina (Beach VB, Men's XC) all having multiple programs honored. Jacksonville (Men's Golf), Austin Peay (Beach VB), Mercer (Beach VB) and Morehead State (Beach VB) were also highlighted.
