Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Mark McGee

Volleyball runs past Middle Tennessee in home opener

NASHVILLE - When a team keeps the game simple it can lead to complexity and defeat for the opponent.

Such was the case for the Lipscomb volleyball team as they beat Middle Tennessee 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Allen Arena in the home opener. The match win gave the Bisons a weekend sweep of MTSU to open the season.

"I want it to look simple," Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "Playing simple means being disciplined and that is hard to do in volleyball.

"Everyone wants to talk about the amazing plays. I like amazing plays too. But I would rather talk about the simple plays."

It was "Senior Day" for the Bisons. Prior to the game Megan Kuper, Samantha Rubal, Alyssa Zwolensky and Ashley Maher were honored.

The Bisons then went quickly to work with a dominating 25-8 set one win. MTSU fought back in the second set for a 25-19 victory.

"Between sets two and three I asked the players if any of them had never lost a set in a volleyball match," Rosenthal said. "There were a lot of chuckles and rolling of eyes.

"They just had to come back and play set three. They just had to move forward. It was a credit to the players. They did their jobs in set three."

The Bisons put together a strong set three with a 25-13 win. They closed out the match with a 25-19 win in set four.

"Obviously, we were challenged," Rosenthal said. "It was fun to see our response.

"It is all about capabilities. We moved a lot of things around. With our depth we have the ability to do that."

Kuper and Rubal each were credited with 16 kills. Kuper slammed four in each set.

Rubal's high was six in set three. Also in double figures in kills was Logan Gish with 14. Meg Mersman added eight.

Delaney Dilfer started as setter for the second match in row. She made 43 assists. Brooke Phillips added six from the setter position. The Bisons finished with 56 assists overall.

Lipscomb held a 60-39 advantage over MTSU in kills.

Kuper and the rest of her teammates were happy with the wins, but they appeared to be equally as happy to play an opponent after months of scrimmages against each other.

"I loved it," Kuper said. "It was fun to see a different lineup.

"We were aggressive. The back row was getting the job done. That makes it so much easier. We have a lot of weapons. We are scary good."
