NASHVILLE – Any worries of an out-of-conference letdown was erased in the second half Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena as the Lipscomb men's basketball team steamrolled Bluefield State 89-56.
After a sluggish first 20 minutes where they fell behind by as many as eight, the Bisons outscored the Big Blue 48-21 after halftime and got 12 players in the scoring column.
Junior Ahsan Asadullah led all players with 19 points in only 19 minutes of action. He was 9-of-14 from the floor, pulled down five rebounds and dished a pair of assists.
Without starters Romeao Ferguson and Greg Jones, the Bisons came out of the gate slow. The Big Blue (1-4) hit a couple 3-pointers to grab the advantage and led until the final two minutes of the first half when KJ Johnson scored seven consecutive points, including a triple from the corner, to take a 36-35 lead with 1:30 on the clock.
Back-to-back buckets from Asadullah and a free throw from Jake Wolfe sent Lipscomb (11-8) into the break, up 41-35.
The purple and gold quickly turned a 6-point lead into a 58-41 advantage on a tough layup from Wolfe after holding Bluefield State scoreless for more than five minutes early in the second half.
Another defensive stance held the Big Blue scoreless for second stretch of five-plus minutes and the Bisons ballooned their lead to 28 after triples from Carson Cary and Tommy Murr with 7:30 on the clock.
Tanner Shulman came off the bench and drilled back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes to stretch the lead to 86-54 before Jacob Hobbs' triple with 41 seconds remaining to wrap up the scoring.
