Where Are They Now? Alex Loyd - Men's Tennis

Alex Loyd was a member of the tennis team when it was still David Lipscomb College and the team competed on the NAIA level. He spent some time remembering his days on campus for Lipscombsports.com.

Name and sport played:

Alex Loyd, Tennis

What years did you compete for Lipscomb, and who coached you?

1979 – 1982, Duane Slaughter and Lynn Griffith.

What teammates were most memorable, and why?

All of them. We were truly a family. Steve Riley, Bobby Weatherly, Jim Shrite, Greg Chambers, Andy Dukes, Greg Ellis, Jimmy Hampton, all great guys, and more.

What degrees have you earned, from where, and when?
Undergraduate B.S. from Lipscomb, MS from Tennessee State University in Counseling Psychology, and a PhD from Tennessee State University in Psychology, ND (naturopathic doctorate) from The First National University of Naturopathic Medicine.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

Tennis Scholarship and I went to high school there.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

The conference championship came down to us and Union at the end of the season. Every time we played it was so close, like 5-4 and, typically, a lot of three-set matches and ending as darkness is coming. We were so fired up and intense we beat them 9-0 and almost every match was three sets. That and going to the nationals.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

Ricky Slaughter – he was my doubles partner in high school and the best athlete I have ever seen – this was before his accident.

Then after his accident, I was inspired to work a little harder knowing Ricky couldn't play at all. Then Rick came to the Lord and dramatically turned his life around and wrote a book about his experience.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

Girls, girls, girls! It was great – that and sports was my thing, and my grades reflected that.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

To be who God made me to be, not who others or even myself wanted me to be.

Who were your favorite professors?

Buddy Arnold and Carol Ellis

Where did you grow up?

In Nashville from age nine, East Tennessee before that.

Where do you live, and what do you do now?

I live in Brentwood off Murray Lane. For years I did private practice counseling and therapy. I started the counseling programs at three Churches of Christ. I did a doctoral internship at Lipscomb under Bob Sturgeon PhD (head of psychology department at that time).

I left that practice and started writing books and lecturing around the world on a new process I discovered that would reduce negative emotions and stress about 90 percent in 30 minutes. The book, "The Healing Code", became a "New York Times" bestseller, and I have been published in 30 languages and 40 countries. It was a No. 1 national bestseller in seven countries and a top 10 national bestseller in 22 other countries.

Today I have trained about 500 other professionals to administer my process to patients and clients. My publisher (Random House and Hachette) says my practice is the largest in the world with clients in 50 states and 181 countries. I mainly just write and lecture today.

Tell us about your family:

I met my wife Hope at Lipscomb but we never dated there. I had graduated and we met, dated, and were married in 1986. Her maiden name was Tracey Bost. We have two wonderful sons, Harry and George (yes, "It's a Wonderful Life" is my favorite movie). Harry graduated from Lipscomb six years ago and is a writer today. George is in his senior year at Lipscomb University and is majoring in psychology.
