Â
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fueled by
Jordan Peete's 17 points, Lipscomb rolled past the Hawks to earn the team's first win of the season in their home opener on Tuesday night.Â
Â
Shorter opened the game strong shooting four-for-six from the floor to open up a 9-4 lead on the Bisons, who misfired on their first four attempts.Â
Â
The Bisons' shooting woes continued as they connected on just three out of their first 15 attempts. However, with 2:18 to play in the opening quarter,
Sydney Shelton drove to the basket and converted at the rim to spark the Bisons offense. Shelton assisted on the following possession before draining another from long-range to end the quarter on a 7-0 Bisons run and give them a four-point advantage at the break.Â
Â
Both teams struggled from the field in the second period as they traded blows throughout. With 1:08 to play in the second period, Shorter's Jasmine Gaines looked as if she had tied the game going into the break, but Lipscomb's
Maddie Cook drained a three-point try of her own as the buzzer sounded to give the Bisons a 31-28 advantage.Â
Â
Lipscomb broke loose in the second half shooting 68-percent (19-of-28) from the field while tightening the clamps on defense and holding the Hawks to just 15-percent (6-for-40). Peete was instrumental in the Bisons' resurgence as she highlighted a 19-6Â run in which she contributed seven points. The Bisons held on to the lead and cruised to a 73-50 win.Â
