Softball drops both games in 2021 debut

MOBILE, Ala. – It was anything but a day at the beach as Lipscomb opened its softball season with a pair of losses in the Jaguar Classic.

The Lady Bisons opened with a 4-3 loss to Butler and closed out with a 6-0 defeat to classic host South Alabama Friday at Jaguar Field. Butler, from the Big East, is 3-4. South Alabama, from the Sun Belt Conference, is 3-2.

"We have to learn from these games," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "We can't keep doing the same things if we want to be successful."

The classic continues Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Bisons will play Murray State at 10:30 a.m. followed by a rematch with Butler at 1 on Saturday. They close out the  weekend at 12:30 p.m. with a second game with the host team.

Emily Yakubowski started against South Alabama. In four innings she allowed six hits and five runs, all earned. She struck out six and walked two.

"She made outs when she needed them and threw a good game, but there were a few pitches here and there that she missed, and they capitalized. They were hitting the ball well to all fields."

Laine Barefoot made her collegiate debut on the mound and pitched the final two innings. She gave up one hit, one run and walked one.

South Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. The Jaguars added one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Allie Hughen, 1-0, went the distance for USA allowing only two hits, both singles by Joie Giarrizzo and Caitlin Turner. She struck out five batters, walked one and hit one batter.

Breana Burke, a transfer from UNLV, pitched her first game for Lipscomb. She went the distance allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned), two walks, two hit batters and six strikeouts.

"Bree is gritty," Ryman said. "We know every time we put the ball in her hands she is going to compete. I love that about her. I love how she attacks."

Kamrie Rich led the Lady Bisons in hitting with two hits and one RBI. Caitlin Turner added a double and scored a run. Presley Leebrick also added a double and scored a run.

Giarrizzo singled in her first collegiate game and ended with two hits for the day. Jessie Brown added a single and a run.

Amy Vetula connected for an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull the Lady Bisons to within a run of tying the game. Kyndall Crawford singled to round out the Lipscomb hitting.

Brown and Giarrizzo each stole a base against Butler.

"Joie is going to be a special player," Ryman said. "She has so much heart and passion behind what she does. She provided a good spark for us at the bottom of the order."

Butler struck first with a run in the second inning and another in the third. Lipscomb answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

Karli Ricketts, 2-1, threw a complete game for Butler. She scattered nine hits, struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter. All three runs were earned. Butler struck for runs in both the fifth and sixth inning with Lipscomb adding another in the bottom of the sixth.

"We were nervous and jittery," Ryman said. "It was our first game after a long  layoff. You want to see your players kind of loose and I thought we started a little bit uptight.

"Defensively, we had several miscues Butler was able to capitalize on. Some weren't errors, but misuses that would have gotten out of innings had we made the plays."

It was a learning experience for the Lady Bisons in many ways.

"I thought we did some good things in the Butler game, but we made too many mistakes to overcome it," Ryman said. "We challenged them a little bit after the second game.

"Who do we want to be? That is a really broad question. But at the end of the day, we have to make sure all the little things are being done. They are in good spirits right now. This is a really good group with a lot of talent."
