Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. – The only thing more fun than one win is two of them.
The Lipscomb Lady Bisons doubled their fun Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Jaguar Classic with a 4-0 shutout of Murray State (1-6) from the OVC. They dodged a late rally by Butler (3-5) and held on for a 7-6 win over the Big East foe.
Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman challenged her players after dropping two games to open the season Friday. They obviously listened to what she had to say.
"We saw our offense continue to be aggressive," Ryman said. "We had a pretty good plate awareness and pretty good discipline.
"We were able to generate some things. We had some timely hits, especially in the Murray State game. We were getting contributions throughout the lineup which was exciting for me."
In the nightcap with Butler the Lady Bisons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Butler chipped away with one run in the second and another in the third.
But the Lady Bisons put together another three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth sparked by a two-RBI single through the right side by Amy Vetula and a RBI single by Caitlin Turner through the left side.
Lipscomb added another run in the fifth when Kyndall Crawford drove in a run on an infield single with what proved to be the winning run.
Butler scored four runs in the seventh, including three on a throwing error by Breana Burke. But Burke rallied to close out the game on a fly out and a ground out.
Maddie Siemer, a transfer from Appalachian State, made her first start for Lipscomb and picked up the win. In 6.1 innings she gave up only three hits, walked eight and struck out five. Butler scored six runs against her, two earned.
Burke picked up her first save of the season. She entered the seventh inning with one out and bases loaded. She walked one on the way to closing out the win.
Maddie Seigworth fell to 0-2 for Butler. She pitched three innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks. She recorded one strikeout.
MacKenzie Griman threw the final three innings. The Lady Bisons connected for four hits against her for three runs, one earned. She walked two and struck out two.
In the Murray State win, freshman pitcher Laine Barefoot won her first collegiate start and her first shutout going the distance. She allowed three hits and struck out two. She did not walk a batter.
Olivia Ward drove in the first run of the game with a double to left field in the top of the fourth.
"That was a big at bat by Liv with two outs," Ryman said. "From there we started pouring it on more."
In the fifth Vetula singled to shortstop to drive in a run. Presley Leebrick singled up the middle to bring home two more runs in the inning.
Leebrick added a double as well. Also getting two hits were Vetula and Kamrie Rich including one double. Katelyn Belding also pounded a double.
The Racers used three pitchers. Jenna Veber (0-4) started and gave up seven hits and four runs, all earned in 4.2 innings. She struck out two. Kamryn Carcich hurled one-third of an inning and allowed one hit. Hannah James pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out five.
"Sometimes as a coach you give speeches and walk away wondering if they really took it to heart," Ryman said. "I truly walked away last night feeling they were impacted by the conversations we had.
"I felt like we would see a different team and we really did. I was so impressed not only with the on-field things we saw but our dugout was also awesome. One of the big challenges was for not only those on the field, but the supporting cast, to go all in. We saw that a lot more today."
