CONWAY, S.C. – And then there were two.
The Chanticleer Showdown, hosted by Coastal Carolina, was originally scheduled for four teams. Marshall and Charleston Southern have opted out due to COVID-19 protocols. That means the weekend will be a true showdown between Lipscomb's Lady Bisons and Coastal Carolina at St. John Stadium.
Lipscomb is 4-3 after ending a four-game winning streak Wednesday after a doubleheader split against Northern Iowa. Coastal Carolina is 2-4 having lost its last three games.
Friday the two teams meet at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon a doubleheader is scheduled at noon and 2:30. Sunday's series finale with the Sun Belt Conference foe begins at 10 a.m.
"We could have gone there for a three-game series, but we missed five games the first weekend of the season," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "We are traveling a long way, so we decided to play four games. At this point we have a young, growing team that needs games and needs to play."
Coastal Carolina is led offensively by Kayla Rosado with a .500 batting average. Makiya Thomas is hitting at a .368 clip with three doubles. Iyvanla De Jesus is batting .333. Ally Clegg rounds out the leaders with a .300 average and three doubles.
Courtney Dean leads the Chanticleers with seven RBI and two home runs.
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko is 2-1 with a 3.05 earned run average and 28 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
Kamrie Rich has been setting the offensive pace for the Lady Bisons. She is batting in the clean-up position and she is doing just that with eight RBI and a team-leading .435 batting average.
Leadoff hitter Amy Vetula has posted a .360 average with three doubles, four RBI and three stolen bases. Caitlin Turner, batting in the No. 3 spot, is third in hitting with a .348 average and two doubles. Presley Leebrick, hitting second, is batting .273.
"Kamrie is off to such a great start," Ryman said, "With the batters she has in front of her she in the perfect position to drive in a lot of runs this year.
"I am pumped to see her have so much early success. She is a competitor. She is working really hard right now. She is being disciplined about what she needs to do. It is paying off already and I think it is going to carry over."
Olivia Ward, fifth in the order, is the fourth Lady Bison hitting over .300 with a .333 average. She has a double, a home run and four RBI.
Breanna Burke (2-1) leads the Lipscomb pitching staff with a 1.69 ERA and one save. She has struck out 17 batters in 20.2 innings.
Laine Barefoot (1-1) has a 1.75 ERA followed by Maddie Siemer (1-0) with a 2.21 ERA. Emily Yakubowski (0-1) rounds out the staff.
"There is a lot of season left to go," Ryman said. "We have to keep working on being better."
