Volleyball sweeps Bellarmine in first-ever meeting

NASHVILLE – It didn't take long for Lipscomb volleyball to get back on track as the Bisons quickly dispatched ASUN newcomer Bellarmine in a clean 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-16, 25-16) Friday at Allen Arena.

The Bisons improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Senior Megan Kuper recorded a match high 14 kills, leading a balanced Lipscomb attack that hit .345 for the match. She now has seven outing of 10+ kills in nine matches.

Kuper was joined in double-figures kills by freshman Kamryn Bacus who belted 12 kills and swung .455 on 22 attacks.

Sami Rubal and Lanie Wagner each totaled eight kills and combined for six blocks.

Freshman Brooke Phillips got the first start of her career at setter and came away with a career high 40 assists, coupled with two kills and two blocks. Senior Alyssa Zwolensky led the way on defense with a season high 26 digs as she and Ashley Maher's nine digs held the Knights (1-8, 0-5) to .104 hitting as a team.

SET ONE
Lipscomb raced out to a 10-4 lead on a kill by Wagner before Bellarmine made a run to trim it to 11-9, forcing a Bison timeout. The teams traded points until Rubal and Phillips teamed up to bookend a Bellarmine timeout with a pair of blocks, pushing the score to 21-16 in favor of the purple and gold. A kill from Bacus and an ace from Ashleigh Albert ended the set with a 25-20 victory.

SET TWO
The Bisons raced out to another quick start in the second set, leading 11-7 thanks to a tear drop over the block from Kuper to end a long rally. Freshman Meg Mersman began to take over the set, earning three kills in a four-point run to give Lipscomb its largest advantage of the frame at 22-13. A kill by Kuper put an end to the frame with a 25-16 win.

SET THREE
Kuper continued to dominate in the third set, recording seven kills in the frame and combining with Bacus for 11 kills and only two errors. The Bisons jumped out once again to an 11-4 lead on a swing from Rubal before back-to-back kills from Kuper made it 18-11. Down the stretch four different players, coupled with a Bellarmine service error, earned the Bisons their fifth sweep of the season.
