CONWAY, S.C. – Sometimes the answers can't be found no matter how hard you try.
Such was the case Saturday afternoon as the Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Coastal Carolina at St. John Stadium.
Lipscomb rallied in game one but fell short 10-9. A four-run outburst by Coastal Carolina in the sixth inning of game two sealed a 7-2 loss for Lipscomb.
Lipscomb is 5-5. Coastal Carolina is 4-5.
Coastal Carolina started out quickly in the night cap with a run in the first and two in the second.
Lipscomb's first hit of the game was a single by Caitlin Turner in the fifth inning.
In the sixth Presley Leebrick doubled down the right field line to score Joie Giarrizzo who reached base on an infield error to open the inning. Olivia Ward grounded out to third to bring home Amy Vetula with Lipscomb's second run of the game.
Emily Yakubowski (0-2) took the loss. She gave up five hits and walked one in 1.2 innings. All three runs she allowed were earned.
Breana Burke finished the game. In 4.1 innings she gave up three hits and four runs, including a two-RBI homer in the sixth. She walked one and struck out one.
Iyanla De Jesus (1-1) went the distance for Coastal Carolina. She held the Lady Bisons to three hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Game one was a give-and-take the entire way. Lipscomb scored three runs in the second on a two-RBI bunt double by Elise Shewmaker and a single by Vetula.
Coastal Carolina answered with two runs in the second and three in the third for a 5-3 lead. Both teams scored a run in the fourth. Katelyn Belding hit a solo homer for the Lady Bisons in the inning.
In the fifth the Chanticleers scored four runs on a solo round tripper and a three-RBI home run.
Lipscomb answered with three runs in the sixth on a fielder's choice, a wild pitch and a single by Ward.
They would add one more in the seventh on a single by Shewmaker.
Laine Barefoot (1-2) was the loser. She gave up six hits and five runs, two earned, in 2.2 innings. Maddie Siemer came in to complete the game allowing two hits and five runs, three earned. She walked five and struck out five in 3.1 innings.
Coastal Carolina sent three pitchers to the circle. Raelee Brabham (1-1) was the winner. She gave up 10 hits and five runs, all earned. She recorded one strikeout.
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko threw one inning. Lipscomb connected for five hits and four runs, three earned. She walked one.
Zana Riley was credited with a save with one hit and one strikeout in one inning.
Extra Innings:
- The 16 hits in game one is a season single-game high for the Lady Bisons. Eight different players slammed two hits.
- Rich leads the team with five multi-hit games. Vetula is second with four and Leebrick has three.
- Belding's home run was her first in a collegiate game.
- Ward's hitting streak ended at a team-high seven games. Rich's streak stopped at five. Both failed to get a hit in game two.
- Vetula is the current leader with hits in her last four games.
- Leebrick and Shewmaker each stole a base in game one, their first of the season.
- Vetula's stolen base in game one is her fourth. She leads the team.
- Giarrizzo stole a base in each game. She has three in three attempts this season.
