Softball Falls In Chanticleer Showdown Finale

CONWAY, S.C. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are heading back home with few, if any, fond memories of a South Carolina weekend.

Sunday afternoon the Lady Bisons closed out the abbreviated Chanticleer Showdown with a 7-2 loss to Coastal Carolina at St. John Stadium.

Lipscomb is 5-6 with three straight losses. Coastal Carolina is 5-5.

"It hurts right now," Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman said. "We are going to continue to look a little more inward in practice this week.

"We faced off a good team and there were some glaring weaknesses. We are still in the mode of challenging our team to work and work and work and find ways to be better."

The Lady Bisons scored on a fielding error by the third baseman in the first inning. They added a second run in the third on a single up the middle by Caitlin Turner.

In the fourth the Chanticleers, sparked by a two-RBI double and a two-run homer, scored five runs. They added two more in the fifth on a two-RBI double.

Breana Burke (3-2) started for Lipscomb. She allowed nine hits and five runs, all earned. She walked one and struck out three.

Maddie Siemer threw two-thirds of an inning. She gave up one hit and two earned runs, walked two and struck out one.

Laine Barefoot closed out the game with one hit in 1.1 innings.

"Our pitching struggled at times," Ryman said. "Coastal Carolina is a good hitting team, but the entire staff has to get better."

Kaitlin Beasley-Polko (3-2) threw a complete game. She scattered five hits, walked four and struck out four.

"It was a great opportunity to go out and compete against a good team that would be in the upper half of our conference as well," Ryman said. "We felt like it would be a good test for us.

"We had a busy week with a games Wednesday and having to leave at 6 a.m. Thursday for South Carolina. I think our lack of practice showed. We made a lot off key mistakes at crucial times and a lot of them led to runs."
