Bisons Take Two To Open Purple/Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – What a better way to make a chilly day and night warmer than to win two games.

The Lipscomb softball team opened the first day of the Purple/Gold Challenge Friday at windy and cold Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium with a 5-0 win over Loyola-Chicago and a 9-4 victory against Oakland.

"It was definitely good to get back on the winning track," Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman said. "I thought offensively we did a lot of nice things, but still at times we left a good number of runners on.

"But on the whole we hit the ball well. I will definitely take that. We had a lot of hard hit balls right at people."

Lipscomb is 7-6. Loyola-Chicago is 1-7. Oakland starts its season 0-2.

Breana Burke (4-2) threw a complete game against Oakland scattering seven hits and allowing four runs, three earned. She walked one and struck out three.

Oakland sent three pitchers to the circle. Lauryn Debono (0-1) took the loss. In 1.2 innings she gave up three hits and four runs, all earned. She walked three.

Emily Karas threw 3.1 innings. She gave up seven hits and two runs, one earned. She walked one and struck out two.

Marisa Muglia closed out the game with one hit, three runs, two earned. She walked two.

All 11 hits for the Lady Bisons were singles in the Oakland game. Six Lipscomb players stole bases with Vetula stealing two against Oakland.

"We do have a lineup that lends itself to the short game at times," Ryman said. "There were some timely hits. "We found a way to put balls in play and utilize our speed on the bases."

In the Loyola-Chicago win Olivia Ward drove in Presley Leebrick with a double to left center for Lipscomb.

The Lady Bisons  made it 4-0 in the third on a bases loaded triple down the left field line by Kyndall Crawford.

Amy Vetula was hit by a pitch with bases loaded for one more run in the sixth.

Maddie Siemer (2-0) threw her first shutout of the season against Loyola-Chicago. She allowed two hits while walking three, hitting two batters and striking out six.

Sydney Ruggles (1-4) opened for the Ramblers. In 2.1 innings she gave up three hits and three runs, one earned. She struck out two and walked three.

Bri Clifton closed out the game with three hits and two runs, one earned, in 3.1 innings. She struck out one and hit a pair of batters.

"We can't go into Saturday thinking it is going to be easy…we won today, and we can do it tomorrow," Ryman said, "That is the beauty of our sport.

"You have to show up every single day and find a way. We have to buckle back down and get to work."

Extra innings:
  • Vetula and Leebrick lead the team having reached base in eight straight games.
  • With two hits against Oakland Vetula leads the team with six multi-hit games.
  • Crawford hit the first triple of her college career against Loyola-Chicago. With two hits in each game she has three multi-hit games. Her three RBI against Loyola-Chicago is a career single-game high.
  • Caitlin Turner has a four-game hitting streak. Ward, whose seven-game hit streak is the longest of the season, has hits in her last three games.
