Softball Beats Loyola, Falls To Oakland In Thrilling Saturday At Purple/Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A frustrating afternoon became an evening of jubilation for the Lipscomb softball team.

Saturday's games at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium gave the Lady Bisons a taste of both. They lost to Oakland in game one as a no-hitter and shutout both ended with four runs by the Golden Grizzlies in the seventh for a 4-2 Lipscomb loss. In game two they battled Loyola-Chicago through nine shutout innings before falling behind 1-0 in the 10th before coming back for a 2-1 win.

Lipscomb is 8-7. Loyola-Chicago is 2-8. Oakland finished the weekend 1-3.

"This game (Loyola-Chicago) was such a big example of what we have been asking from our team," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "And it was not just the fight. This team always fights.

"It was more about the rebound and the mentality that came after a heartbreaking loss. Could we pick ourselves up, refocus and execute in the now? It was 0-0 for so long and that can wear on you after a while. But we kept grinding and found a way."

An RBI-double down the left field line by Madison Ebeling broke the scoreless deadlock. Right fielder Caitlin Turner prevented another run as she threw out the runner at home on a clutch tag by catcher Kamrie Rich to give Lipscomb momentum going into the bottom of the 10th.

Back-to-back doubles by Presley Leebrick and Olivia Ward brought home the tying and winning runs.

"Presley is 0-2 in the count and found a way to double the ball in the gap (in left center) and that was huge," Ryman said. "Liv came up and slammed a double into right center. Even if it had been caught it would have brought in the winning run."

Breana Burke (5-2) went the distance for Lipscomb against the Ramblers. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out eight.

"It was a gritty kind of performance by Bre," Ryman said. "I thought she set the tone early for us.

"She threw lot of pitches. She was still fighting at the end and in the extra innings. She did a great job."

Madison Veres started in the circle for Loyola-Chicago. She threw 4.1 innings with two hits and two strikeouts.  Bri Clifton (0-3) pitched five innings. She gave up five hits, walked two and struck out two. She and Veres both hit one batter.

In the Oakland game Maddie Siemer entered the top of the seventh working on a no-hitter and a shutout. Siemer walked the first batter and then struck out the next hitter. Siemer then walked the bases loaded with two consecutive walks and lost her shutout attempt when she hit Cammie Brummitt with a pitch. Two errors brought in three more runs.

Siemer then gave up a single to Lauren Griffith forcing Ryman to bring in Bre Burke to close out the game.

The Lady Bisons had opened with a run in the first on single to center field by Olivia Ward. They added one in the second when Elise Shewmaker tripled and scored on a single to shortstop by Amy Vetula.

Siemer (2-1) walked seven, hit two batters and struck out eight. Only one of the runs she allowed was earned. Bre Burke closed out the game pitching the final two thirds of an inning with one strikeout.

Sydney Campbell (1-1) threw a complete game scattering six hits, walking one and striking out three.

"We had a lot of frustration after game one," Ryman said. "Maddie threw so well. The walks kind of caught up to her along with a late hit by pitch.

"It was my decision to keep her in. I wanted to let her go on. I thought when she was in the zone, she obviously had them under control all day. Unfortunately, we also had some miscues on plays that more often than not we make, and those errors created the loss. So, there was some heartbreak there at the end."

Extra Innings:
  • Center fielder Makayla Alvey made her first collegiate start in the Loyola-Chicago game.
  • It was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Lady Bisons.
  • Shewmaker's triple was the first of her college career. She also hit her third double of the season in the Loyola-Chicago game.
  • Kyndall Crawford also added a double in the Loyola-Chicago game.
  • Vetula's stolen base against Oakland was her eighth of the season.
  • Leebrick's two hits in the Loyola-Chicago game give her four multi-hit games.
  • Caitlin Turner has hits in her last six games and Ward has connected in the last five.
