Softball Run-Rules Loyola-Chicago To Cap 4-1 Weekend At Purple/Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman's key word for the day for her team was "finish".

The Lady Bisons finished and more. In the sixth inning they scored eight runs on eight hits.

They not only broke a 1-1 tie but run-ruled Loyola-Chicago for a 9-1 win in the finale of the Purple-Gold Challenge Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium.

Lipscomb is 9-7. Loyola-Chicago falls to 2-9.

"It was such a great ending," Ryman said. "What a huge inning for us offensively.

"We were able to string together a lot of good at bats. That was something we had kind off struggled with all weekend. I was really proud of that inning. We just kept going on and on."

Amy Vetula started strong for Lipscomb with a lead-off triple to left center.  She scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Olivia Ward.

The Ramblers tied the game in the third on a throwing error.

In the sixth Lipscomb exploded for seven hits, including a double by Kyndall Crawford and two-RBI singles by Elise Shewmaker and Presley Leebrick. A double to right field by Meghan Kline drove in the final two runs of the game.

Kline, Katelyn Belding and Jenna Endris all had hits as pinch-hitters in the sixth.

"All three of them came off the bench and did something," Ryman said. "Pinch-hitting is one of the hardest things to do.

"That is something we talk a lot about…the depth we have. All three of them having success was fun to see."

Lipscomb's Breana Burke ran her record to 6-2. She gave up four hits, walked one, hit one batter and struck out five.

"I am so proud of Bre," Ryman said. "She faced the same team for the second game in a row and was equally effective if not more so at times. It was really huge for her."

Loyola-Chicago used three pitchers. Madison Veres (0-1) started. She allowed five hits and three runs, all earned. She struck out four, walked one hit Crawford twice.

Bri Clifton was slammed for six hits. She also walked a batter. Lipscomb scored six runs, all earned, against her.

Dani Brown came in for the final two outs.

"It was a good way to end the weekend," Ryman said. "We talked in pregame about finish, finish, finish. That can get monotonous.

"We are a young team and that is one of those things we need to keep learning. I saw a lot of bright spots. We are seeing the potential with this team. Now it is about getting over that hump and being more consistent."

Extra Innings:
  • Ward leads the team with a six-game hitting streak. She has hits in 13 games.
  • Vetula with a double and her first triple of the season has a team-high seven multi-hit games. Rich has six.
  • Shewmaker has put together a five-game hitting streak.
  • Leebrick, Ward and Shewmaker all drove in two runs. It was the second multi-RBI game for each of them.
  • Ward and Shewmaker each stole a base.
