NASHVILLE, Tenn. – To win a game a team has to take advantage of its chances.

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons got a quick wakeup call from the Belmont Bruins Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning the Lady Bisons weren't able to regroup in a 5- 1 loss.

The Lady Bisons are 9-8. Belmont is 5-7.

"Belmont came out aggressive and attacked us," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "We were never able to get back in it."

Katie Turner, making her first start since last season, gave up four runs, three in the first inning. The big hit in the inning was a two-run homer by Alicia Veltri, one of her two home runs in the game.

In the first Turner gave up a single, triple and the home run to the first three batters, but then settled down. She allowed four hits and four runs, struck out six and did not walk a batter in four innings.

"Call it jitters or having to adjust to being back," Ryman said. "Belmont's first three hitters are strong.

"After that she settled in and did a great job. We saw enough of what we needed to see from her moving forward."

Breanna Burke closed out the game for Lipscomb. She gave up three hits and one run. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Veltri (3-4) picked up the win for the Bruins. In three innings she scattered four hits and allowed only one run. She struck out two and walked two.

Autumn McDaniel threw the final four innings.  She gave up three hits, walked a batter and struck out two.

Presley Leebrick was the only Lipscomb batter with two hits including a double to left center in the third inning when the Lady Bisons scored their only run on a ground
out to third base by Kyndall Crawford.

"We are still trying to figure out who we are," Ryman said. "We are still trying to learn to play with consistency. We had chances.

"We didn't make adjustments and it wasn't for lack of trying. We just didn't succeed. We struggled with it."

Extra innings:
  • It was the first loss for the Lady Bisons in the Belmont series since April 30, 2011, ending an eight-game winning streak.
  • Leebrick has five doubles. This was her sixth multi-hit game tying her with Kamrie Rich for the lead.
  • Elise Shewmaker extended her hitting streak to six games. She has reached base safely in her last nine games.
