Lipscomb Splits Softball Doubleheader With Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – For the Lipscomb Lady Bisons it was a doubleheader with a Jekyll and Hyde theme at the plate.

The Lady Bisons split the first ASUN games of the season with Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park. The Owls took game one, 1-0, with the Lady Bisons prevailing, 5-1, in game two.

Lipscomb is 10-9 (1-1) in the ASUN. Kennesaw State is 7-11 (1-1) in the conference.

The Lady Bisons struck first in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the first inning on sacrifice flies to left field by Olivia Ward and Kamrie Rich.

Kennesaw State scored a run in the fourth.

In the seventh, with bases loaded, Abby Davis walked to bring home a run. Ward added two more runs on a single to right to give the Lady Bisons some breathing room.

"After game one I saw frustration with the girls," Ryman said. "We talked about having to be better offensively and being willing to try different things early in the game like moving around in the box a little and attack pitches earlier in the count."

Maddie Siemer ran her record to 3-1. She pitched three innings and gave up one run and one hit. She walked seven and struck out one.

Katie Turner entered the game in the fourth inning with bases loaded and no outs. She allowed two hits and walked one.

"Katie used her defense well," Ryman said. "We made some really nice plays behind a pitcher coming back from an injury. That was a cool turning point for our defense."

Amy Vetula connected for a game high three hits. She scored two runs and stole a base.  Presley Leebrick added two hits and also stole a base.

"I thought we stalled a little in the middle innings," Ryman said. "We kept the door open for Kennesaw State. We have to find a way to put a game away. When you jump out to an early lead you have to keep the pressure on."

In game one a third inning home run by Cheyanne Sales was all the Owls needed.

Breana Burke (6-3) went the distance for Lipscomb. She scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out three.

"Bre threw an outstanding game," Ryman said. "She threw well enough to win.

"She held a good offense to one run. She is a gritty competitor. She came out and kept fighting for us."

Kennesaw State's Melanie Bennett evened her record at 6-6. She allowed two hits, walked two and struck out nine.

"Their starting pitcher threw a good game, but I thought she did miss at times and we didn't take advantage of it," Ryman said. "We just swung and missed too much.

"We didn't make the necessary adjustments. We never got a runner to third base. We just didn't generate a lot."

Leebrick's pair of singles were the only hits for the Lady Bisons.

"Presley was huge all day," Ryman said. "She is really working hard."

Extra Innings:
  • Leebrick had back-to-back multi-hit games. She has seven for the season.
  • Vetula has a team-leading eight multi-hit games. This was her second three-hit performance.
  • Ward's three runs batted in were a team single-game high. She leads the team with three multi-RBI games.
  • Vetula stole a base in game two. She leads the team with nine. Leebrick and Kelly Paulson each stole a base in game two giving them both two thefts for the season.
  • Leebrick extended her team-leading hit streak to five games.
  • Ward leads the team with 14 RBI.
