Women's Soccer Falls In Season Opener, 2-1

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb women's soccer team came up short in its season opener falling late by a score of 2-1 to Lee on Saturday at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Freshman Evee Reeder scored her first-career goal to even the score in the second half, but Lee responded with just under 10 minutes remaining to seal the match.

The Bisons went into the second half facing a 1-0 deficit after Lee took the lead with a goal in the 41st minute from Kelsey Yoder. After a few dangerous chances for Lipscomb, Reeder was finally able to send one into the lower left corner of the net giving Lipscomb a chance for a comeback victory with the score now even at 1-1. Reeder's goal came in the 75th minute from just outside the box and was assisted on the play by Emily Patti.

The tie would be broken shortly after, however. As Lee pushed down the field on the attack, Riley Henry made a touch pass and found Kierstin Havens on the top of the 18-yard box. Havens took the shot and converted the opportunity as the ball just got around Lipscomb goalkeeper Melissa Gray's outstretched hand.

Facing another deficit and with little time left, the Bisons were pressed to try and force overtime. Despite earning a number of set pieces and corner kicks in the waning minutes, the equalizing goal never came.

"We are experiencing some growing pains at the moment and that's natural considering the additions and subtractions to the squad," head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "I know for certain we have a talented group. We just need to stay positive and hungry in training because the best is yet to come.

"We created enough opportunities to score a few goals, but the combination of great goalkeeping and defending by Lee and an out of sync Bisons attack didn't allow us to capitalize on our chances. Our coaching staff will be hard at work this week training our teams timing of runs, slipping of passes and finishing in the attacking third of the field.

"In my post game talk, I told the girls that in each of the nine seasons I've coached at Lipscomb we've always finished a stronger team than when we started. So, all we need to do is stay committed to the process and improvements will follow."
