Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Mark McGee

Volleyball serves up a sweep in ASUN opener at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Never forget about the little things because when things get tough the extra attention to detail can make a difference.

"The best teams are the teams that can play at a high level whether they are winning or losing," Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "A little bit of what you saw in the first set and at the end of the third were little mental lapses where you don't do everything you need to do. In key moments is when your attention to detail has to go up."

Despite the lapses the Bisons swept the match 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-23. It was the first ASUN match for both teams. Lipscomb is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the ASUN. Liberty is 0-2, 0-1.

The two teams meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

In the opening set the Bisons reeled off a 7-0 run, and then with the score tied 20-20 they outscored the Flames 5-2 down the stretch on two kills each by Megan Kuper and Meg Mersman and one from Lanie Wagner.

The Bisons used a series of runs to assure domination in set two. After pulling ahead 10-7 the Bisons outscored Liberty 15-6 the rest of the way.

"The second set we played really clean," Rosenthal said.

A 3-point scoring run gave the Bisons the edge in set three as they turned a 23-22 deficit into a match-clinching win.

"I thought we did a nice job of getting out to a lead and carrying that lead into the middle of the third set," Rosenthal said. "To be 100 percent honest I think we stopped working. It sounds weird or funny but that was ultimately what it was. What I mean by working is doing the little things that make us different as a team.

"At the end of the day we had our seniors out there and that is what you want. This is what they have trained for. I was really pleased and proud with the way we were able to come back to win the third set and the match."

Kuper tied for the match-high in kills with 11. Mersman added eight and recorded a .667 hit percentage. Wagner made seven kills followed by Samantha Rubal with six.

Liberty held a slight 37-36 edge in total kills.

Delaney Dilfer was credited with a match-high 29 assists of the Bisons' 32 overall.

Serving was a key to the sweep with  Delaney Smith earning three service aces followed by Kuper and Ashleigh Albert with two each. Dilfer and Ashley Maher added one each as the Bisons held a 9-1 advantage in service aces.

Rosenthal and the Bisons will play back-to-back matches for the second weekend in a row. Last time out they swept UAB at Allen Arena and then fell 3-0 the next day on the road at UAB.

"It is a challenge, but I think we learned a lot from the UAB match," Rosenthal said. "We talked about it all this past week.

"In the second match you have to play even harder after winning the first one. From a mental part of it we will be in a better spot."
