Volleyball serves up 7th-straight win to secure ASUN North crown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lipscomb volleyball captured the ASUN North Division crown on Friday in the Derby City as the Bisons defeated Bellarmine 3-1 (25-10, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21) at Knights Hall.

The victory gave the Bisons at least a share of the division title and locked up a No. 1 seed in next week's ASUN Championship, improving to 13-2 overall and 10-1 in league play. The purple and gold now has a chance to finish off a regular season championship, coveting the best record in the conference with Saturday's season finale.

Middle blockers Sami Rubal and Meg Mersman dominated at the net for head coach Brandon Rosenthal's squad. Rubal hit .429 while pacing the team with 15 kills and only three miscues on 28 swings. Mersman posted a .421 clip with 10 kills, four digs and a team high six blocks. The duo ranks second and third in the ASUN in hitting percentage on the season.

Senior Megan Kuper earned her sixth double-double on the year with 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Delaney Dilfer recorded the second double-double of her career with 43 assists and a season high 13 digs from her setter position.

Defensively the Bisons scooped up 50 digs, eight blocks and limited Bellarmine to just .087 hitting. Seniors Alyssa Zwolensky and Ashley Maher added nine digs from the back row.

SET ONE
The Bisons rolled out of the gate to a 25-10 victory behind a .364 clip on offense and holding the Knights to a -.227 percentage. Zwolensky and Kuper got it going from the service line early with aces, while Garrett Joiner, Dilfer and Kuper each picked up kills to make it 8-3. Lipscomb went on a 5-0 run with Dilfer serving to stretch the score to 15-7. Maher was the next server and carried the momentum with an 8-0 run before Kuper slammed home the final kill of the frame.

After trading 2-point runs over the next few possessions, the Bisons could never get any closer as the Knights pulled the match even with a 25-20 win. Bellarmine outhit Lipscomb .256 to .205 in the set.

SET THREE

A few points later, Kuper hammered down two kills in a set-closing 5-1 run to win 25-16 and grab a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET FOUR
In the final stanza the Bisons struggled with just a .114 hitting clip, but put forth a strong defensive performance to close it out. Mersman got three of the team's four blocks in the frame and put the purple and gold up 11-8 with her lone solo stuff of the match. Following a kill from Rubal, Smith put down her fourth ace of the night to extend the lead to 16-11.
