Volleyball advances to 16th-straight ASUN Championship semifinal

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb volleyball team continued its special season Saturday night when the top-seeded Bisons swept No. 4 Bellarmine 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) in the first round of the ASUN Tournament inside Allen Arena.

With the win Lipscomb (15-2) advances to the ASUN semifinals for a 16th-straight season and will meet the No. 2 seed out of the south division - North Florida. The Ospreys swept Stetson 3-0 in their first round matchup Saturday in Jacksonville.

The Bisons high-powered offense was the story, hitting .361 as a team and swinging .375 or higher over the final two sets. Senior Megan Kuper led the team with 13 kills, while fellow senior Samantha Rubal hammered 11 and hit a team-high .667 on 15 swings. She also matched the team high with three blocks.

SET ONE
The opening frame went back-and-forth in the early portion before an ace from Delaney Smith and a kill from Kuper led a 5-1 run that put the Bisons up 15-11 midway through. After the Knights (4-13) pulled back to within two, the Bisons got a kill from Delaney Dilfer and back-to-back blocks to push the advantage to 20-16. The final two points were owned by the middles Meg Mersman and Rubal to clinch the opening frame, 25-19.

SET TWO
In the second set, Lipscomb led wire to wire and was only tied for one point. Kuper powered the Bison offense with six of the team's 15 kills in the frame. Leading 16-14 after an unsuccessful challenge from the Bisons, Smith dropped back-to-back aces in the midst of a 4-0 run. Another ace, this time from Dilfer, coupled with kills from Mersman, Kuper and Garrett Joiner sent the purple and gold to the locker room with a 25-18 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match. As a squad, Lipscomb hit .375 and served up four aces.

SET THREE
Lipscomb put the Knights away with a dominating 25-16 win in set three after leading for every point. A 5-0 run took the lead to 8-2 early on before a 7-2 spurt ballooned the advantage to 10 points after Bellarmine's second called timeout. Rubal pounded two kills down the stretch, Ashleigh Albert added and ace before Lanie Wagner put the exclamation point on the night with her lone kill, handing the Bisons a 3-0 sweep. The Bisons recorded 17 kills and hit a blistering .484 in the frame.
