Women's Soccer Falls To Alabama In Overtime, 1-0

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Alabama on Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The Bisons defense had a strong outing staving off Alabama's attack in regulation, but a golden goal from the Crimson Tide in overtime was the deciding factor.

A defensive battle broke out in the Music City between the Bisons and Crimson Tide with neither side finding the back of the net over 90 minutes of play.

Lipscomb's best chance of the day came just before the halftime whistle off a corner kick from Emily Patti. Patti's cross into the box found the head of Kelli Beiler, who redirected the ball towards the goal, but Alabama's goalkeeper punched it away for the save. After a couple of deflections on the punch out save, the ball came to Beiler again, but she sent the ball over the crossbar.

In the 66th minute, the Crimson Tide almost found the back of the net to take the lead. Midfielder Kat Rogers snuck behind the Bisons back line and had a wide open goal, but sent her shot wide of the target keeping the match locked at 0-0.

Lipscomb's defensive effort was overcome not too long after the start of the overtime period with a golden goal by Reyna Reyes in the 93rd minute. Alabama defender Bella Scaturro found some room on the near side of the pitch and played a floating cross into the box. The cross found the foot of Reyes, who tucked her shot attempt into the back of the net ending the match.

"I'm really proud of our response," head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "We made some changes at halftime and it was really helpful. We went a little bit more defensive-minded, but I think we needed to be against [Alabama]. We had a few dangerous counter-attacks, a few dangerous set pieces.

"You hate to lose any game, but as a coach, when your team leaves it on the field and they dig deep and they fight and scrap and compete the way they did today, I'm nothing but proud of them and thankful for them.

"I think this group has a really bright future still. I told them, 'don't let let the disappointment of the day get you down', and we just have to regroup and on Tuesday get ready for conference again."
