Burke And Leebrick Lead Lipscomb In Shutout Win Over Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was a no muss, no fuss kind of game for Lipscomb softball.

The Lady Bisons made all the right moves Wednesday afternoon on the way to a 5-0 shutout of Bellarmine at Knights Field.

"We talk about us learning as we go and having turning point moments," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "This was a good example of our taking a step in the right direction and coming out and feeling like we took care of business."

Lipscomb is 14-13 overall, 3-4 in the ASUN. Bellarmine slips to 6-21 overall, 0-7 in the conference.

Presley Leebrick set the tone for the Lady Bisons with a solo home run over the right field wall in the first inning. It was her first of the season.

"We had a sense after Presley hit the home run that we were going to do some good things offensively," Ryman said. "We missed some opportunities early to put the game out of reach, but I really like the way we attacked offensively. We were very steady throughout."

In the third, Amy Vetula opened with a double down the left field line. With one out Caitlin Turner slammed a double down the right field line to score Vetula. Kyndall Crawford rapped a single to center field to bring Caitlin Turner home for a 3-0 lead.

Leebrick would strike again in the fourth with a single to right center to score Vetula and Abby Davis.

"It was cool to see us so loose," Ryman said. "This team plays well when it is loose, but there is a fine line. I think we found that today. And when this team finds that zone it is fun."

Breana Burke (10-5) went the distance for Lipscomb. She scattered four hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter.

"Bre did a tremendous job from the very beginning," Ryman said, "She really limited what Bellarmine was able to do offensively.

"She really attacked early. We made some nice defensive plays behind her all the way down to Kelly Paulson making a really great diving catch at second base to end the game."

Carson Goatley (4-8) pitched the first 2.1 innings. She gave up five hits and three runs, all earned. She walked three and struck out two.

Natalie Magnuson closed out the game and allowed three hits and two earned runs in 4.2 innings.

EXTRA INNINGS:
  • It was the first complete game shutout for Burke. She combined with Maddie Siemer for a 1-0 win over Stetson.
  • This was the fourth shutout of the season for Lipscomb pitchers.
  • Vetula, with two hits, has 10 multi-hit games.
  • Leebrick's two hits give her nine multi-hit games.
