Softball Falls To Liberty In Series Finale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It was her birthday and Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman shared a nicely decorated cake with her team, but not the present she really wanted.

Liberty closed out the ASUN series Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium with a 4-0 shutout of the Lady Bisons. The Flames swept the series with three shutouts.

Hitting will be the focus for the Lady Bisons this week.

"One of the things we can control right now is being very intentional in practice," Ryman said. "Confidence ultimately comes from your preparation.

"There were times this weekend when I felt like we were guessing at the plate. I saw a lack of confidence at times. We have to get back on track offensively. "

The Lady Bisons are 14-16, 3-7 in the ASUN. Liberty is 29-12, 10-2 in the conference. The Lady Flames have won their last eight games.

The Bishop twins set the pace for the Flames as Autumn Bishop opened with a lead-off home run to center field in the first inning. Her twin sister Amber connected for a homer over the left field fence to lead off the seventh. They combined or three hits and three runs as Autumn added a single in the third.

"I believe the Bishop twins are two of the best hitters in the country, not just in our league" Ryman said. "They know how to hit which is obvious. They force you to make a good pitch to beat them. When they swing, they are going to get their money's worth. They not only hit for power, but they hit for a high average."

Breana Burke (10-7) threw a complete game for Lipscomb. She scattered nine hits, walked two, hit one batter and struck out seven.

Left-hander Emily Kirby (9-4) went the distance for the Flames.  She gave up three hits, walked two and struck out seven.

"We struggled to get runners on all day, and you have to credit Kirby," Ryman said. "She can keep you off balance and get you guessing in a hurry.

"We struggled to get that first or second batter on every inning, but again credit their pitching and defense."

Extra Innings:
  • With her single to left center in the sixth inning Caitlin Turner extended her team-leading hitting streak to four games.
  • Kyndall Crawford's double down the left field line in the second was her fifth of the year tying her for second on the team.
Up Next:
The Lady Bisons make their second trip in two weeks to Louisville, Kentucky to face Bellarmine, this time in an ASUN doubleheader. The first game begins at 11 a.m. with the second tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m.
