LIPSCOMB TOPS MISSISSIPPI STATE IN OPENING-NIGHT THRILLER

Final Score: Lipscomb 2, Mississippi State 1
Location: Nashville, Tenn. (Lipscomb Soccer Complex)
Records: Lipscomb (1-0), Mississippi State (0-1)

The Short Story: Led by Logan McFadden and Molly Grant, Lipscomb women's soccer defeated Mississippi State by a score of 2-1 in a thrilling battle where neither team would give an inch on Thursday night.

QUICK FACTS:

  • McFadden netted her fourth career goal for Lipscomb
  • Bisons forward Molly Grant scored the game-winning goal for the Bisons
  • Lipscomb's Grace Oliver and Cami Rogers each recorded assists
  • CJ Graham came up with six saves for Lipscomb
  • Mississippi State outshot Lipscomb by a margin of 13-7

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bisons started off on the back foot as Mississippi State dominated possession for the first ten minutes of the match.
  • Despite playing largely without the ball in the opening stages, Lipscomb created the better of the chances as Katia Hanger and Kammy McGee each recorded shots early on.
  • Lipscomb began to grow into the game and control their share of the ball as the first period progressed.
  • It was in the 40th minute that an in-swinging corner found the head of Grace Oliver just in front of the left goalpost. The substitute's header fell to the feet of McFadden who gave the Bisons a one-goal advantage going into the break.
  • The Bisons once again started slow in the second half. This time Mississippi State capitalized and leveled the score in the 49th minute.
  • Just eight minutes later, Cami Rogers played a ball down the right wing releasing Grant. With a left-footed strike, the forward curled her shot just inside the far post to put the Bisons back in front.
  • The Bulldogs would not go quietly as they once again began to dominate the possession battle and create quality chances in the final third. However, the Bisons staved off the attacks and defended in numbers with a low back line.
  • In the 84th minute of play Mississippi State headed a shot destined for the bottom corner of goal, but was denied emphatically by a diving effort from Graham.

NOTABLE:

  • Lipscomb improves to 3-2 all-time against Mississippi State
  • Grant's deciding goal was the fifth game-winner of her career at Lipscomb
  • Graham's six saves set a career-high mark
HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN

"Hats off to Mississippi State. They're a great team. There were phases of the game when we were chasing and they moved it so well. The have a whole lot of talent…We have always been a team that has worked hard. We have always been committed to defending first and that is what it took tonight. I absolutely love the way this team fights. I am so proud of them."
