Bisons close out LUV Invite with 3-1 loss to Wake Forest

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb volleyball team wrapped up the LUV Invite Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to Wake Forest in Allen Arena.

After winning a thrilling first set 25-21 behind six service aces, the Bisons (1-4) were unable to stave off a Deamon Deacon squad that hit .297 with 10 blocks on the afternoon. Wake Forest (4-2) swept the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16.

A trio of Bisons – Kamryn Bacus, Meg Mersman, Addi Pehlam - led the squad offensively with a match high 13 kills.  Mersman paced the Bisons hitting with a season high .393 percentage and matched Logan Gish at the net with three blocks each.

Setter Delaney Dilfer recorded 45 assists in the four-match set, along with nine digs, three aces, two kills and a solo ace. Starting libero Delaney Smith matched her career high with 17 digs, while Alex Spencer added seven after changing over mid-match to libero.

SET ONE
The first set saw 12 ties and six different lead changes throughout as neither side had an advantage of more than two points until Wake Forest went up 14-11 on a kill from All-Tournament team selection Delaney McSweeney. Following kills from Mersman and Bacus, Dilfer served up all three of her aces in a 4-point run to put the Bisons up 18-16. Later in the frame with the score tied at 21, Mersman and Bacus put down kills and Gish ended things with back-to-back aces. The Bisons hit .286 as a team and served up six aces in the frame.

SET TWO
The second set saw Lipscomb carry the momentum over and race out to a 6-3 advantage, but the Deacs used a 5-0 run to get back in front. They would eventually push the score to 18-11 and never let the Bisons back into the set. The Bisons had 12 kills and 10 attack errors in the set to hit .051.

SET THREE
The third set saw both teams come out firing with six ties before either team got to 10 points. Despite the Bisons hitting .371 in the frame, Wake Forest built a 4-point lead and never let Lipscomb get any closer than two until Mersman and Gish teamed up for a block to make it a 22-21 Deacs. Wake Forest traded points before pulling out the 25-23 win to go up 2-1 in the match.

SET FOUR
Lipscomb did not waste any time in forcing Wake Forest to call timeout. Smith and Gish each served a pair of early aces while kills from four different Bisons built the purple and gold an 11-5 lead. Following an unsuccessful challenge from Wake Forest, Addi Pelham recorded a kill and then teamed with Anna Aubele for a block to make it a 15-10 advantage for the Bisons. Things went downhill from there. The Deacons seemed to land everything on their way to a 15-1 run to close the set and end the match. They outhit Lipscomb .333 to -0.044 and blocked four balls.
