NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite spurts of possession and chances in a back-and-forth game, the Bisons were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit against cross-town rivals Vanderbilt on Thursday evening.
Vanderbilt started with a blistering pace and took advantage before two minutes had run off the clock. After a hard challenge in the Lipscomb penalty area, the Commodores collected the loose ball and buried it in the back of the net to gain a 1-0 advantage. Just 75 seconds later Vanderbilt doubled their lead on a cross to the back post that was tapped in by Madison Elwell.
As time progressed Lipscomb began to settle in and possess more of the ball. The closest the Bisons came to capitalizing was when
Haley Williams got on the end of a ball played into the center of the box. The forward flicked the ball toward goal, but her effort was just inches wide of the mark.
QUICK FACTS:
NOTABLE
- Lipscomb falls to a 4-1 all-time record against the Commodores
- The Bisons will finish with a 2-1 record against power-five opponents in the regular season
HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"Tough start. You can't spot a team like Vanderbilt two goals in three minutes. Very uncharacteristic of our team and it was a little disappointing....Ultimately Vanderbilt came out with a little bit more fire and they took advantage of us early. We tried to respond, and I thought we had some good moments in the first half and early in the second half...Players had some good chances but we did not play our best game today."
