Volleyball Conclude Regular Season with Sweep over North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Lipscomb volleyball concluded their regular season campaign on Sunday in a 3-0 matinee sweep of the North Alabama Lions with set scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 to enter tournament play with an overall record of 15-12, including a 12-4 mark in conference play.

Four members of Lipscomb's squad put down double-digit kills in the matchup. Sophomore Addi Pelham led the way with 15 kills, followed by Caroline Stogner with 11, Berkley Mischler with 10, and Logan Gish with a double-double of 10 kills and 14 digs.

Libero Delaney Smith picked up 13 digs over own to put her within 10 digs of the 400 digs mark this season. Freshman setter Sophia Hudepohl recorded 41 assists in the contest, her 13th match this season to record at least 40 assists and her fifth to do so in just three sets.

The Bisons turned up the heat from the serving line with seven service aces, two each from Stogner, Hudepohl, and Smith plus another ace from Gish.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1
  • The Lions took the early 3-1 lead, but back-to-back kills from Gish, Mischler, and Pelham closed the gap and gave the Bisons the go-ahead.
  • Control of the match moved back and forth as kills from Kailee Bass, Pelham, and Mischler sought to give the Bisons the lead at the 14-13 mark.
  • Stogner's third kill of the match gave Lipscomb a two-point lead and after a response from the Lions a well-timed swipe on an overpass from Bass restored the lead at 18-16.
  • An unanswered six point run for the Bisons sealed the first frame in Lipscomb's favor with Mischler's fourth kill of the set.
  • The first set was contested ground as the teams were tied 10 times during the set with three lead changes.

SET 2
  • A big swing from Pelham kicked off the second set and she followed up a few points later to push a 3-1 lead for Lipscomb.
  • Stogner continued to produce on the outside pin for the Bisons as three kills and back-to-back aces helped push the Bisons to a seven point lead.
  • Pelham's eighth kill of the night sent the match into a media timeout.
  • The Lions put together a 3-1 run to break into double digits in the second frame, but another kill from Mischler broke North Alabama's stride.
  • A kill straight into a service ace for Gish extended the Bisons' lead to eight points at the 19-11 mark to force a timeout from the Lions.
  • Pelham put down her ninth kill of the night to earn the Bisons their first set point opportunity of the second frame and after a brief response from the Lions, her tenth kill claimed the second set for Lipscomb.

SET 3
  • Put the heat on early with four consecutive kills from Berkley Mischler to grab a 6-2 lead for Lipscomb.
  • After a response from the Lions, a 3-0 run for the Bisons extended to a five-point lead.
  • North Alabama claimed a 3-1 run to close the gap to three following a service error from the Bisons.
  • Gish logged her eighth kill of the night to claim a seven point lead, extended to and eight point lead (18-10) by Hudepohl right after.
  • The Bisons' fifth block of the net broke them into the 20-point threshold and Stogner sent the Bisons forward to an eleven point lead at 22-11 after an attacking error from the Lions.
  • A tool for North Alabama kept the Bisons from claiming the match on their first set point opportunity, but Gish's tenth kill of the night ended the match in a sweep.

HERD NOTES:
  • Four Bisons earned double-digit kills this afternoon as Pelham put down 15 kills, Stogner snagged 11, Mischler put away 10 kills, and Gish grabbed a double-double in the contest with 10 kills and 14 digs.
  • Gish led the team in digs and assisted libero Smith in defending Lipscomb's side of the floor as the junior libero scooped up 13 digs of her own to lead the Bisons to out-dig the Lions 29 to 42.
  • Lipscomb's offense dominated the match, collecting 52 kills to North Alabama's 24 and bringing in a .405 hitting percentage to the Lions' .111.

FROM THE BENCH – HC BRANDON ROSENTHAL
"I thought it was a great way to finish the regular season. It was kind of a tricky matchup in the sense that – obviously playing on somebody's senior day, at their home and obviously we have this next week and they don't – you're never really sure what you're going to get effort-wise. I'm just really proud of how focused the girls were.

I thought that outside of the scoresheet or stat line, you could really see us moving confidently in serve receive and in defense. When you're hearing the voices that you're hearing from our girls and seeing the moves that they're making defensively, it's pretty simple and composed against everything that [North Alabama] threw at us.

I thought, overall, our serve created a lot of pressure and defensively we were able to stay under control and focused. Between the serve adding pressure and our defensive pressure, it just makes it tough. I really loved what we did all week long.

Stogs [Caroline Stogner] had a tremendous week both offensively and defensively. It was fun to see her back at it after Friday's big match. Addi [Pelham] also got going really well and Sophia [Hudepohl] was setting her extremely well.

Defensively, you can't say enough about what [Logan] Gish, Smitty [Delaney Smith], Connelly [Renfrow], and Stogs [Caroline Stogner] are doing out of the back row, even Libby [Steinhart] had a couple of really nice digs. I think more than anything, it's just showing the way we continue to move and play with confidence.

I think this team is in a great spot to go into this tournament at home next week and we're super excited to play in front of our fans again, but more than that, to just be with each other because I've said it all year – we've had a lot of fun.

They just come in to work and through getting to work with them, we've seen how they've risen to every challenge that has been put in front of them. There's no doubt that Central Arkansas has had a great season and we had a battle with them at our place last time, so it's going to be a fun tournament.

I think, for all teams #1-#8, nobody is truly, truly safe. Everybody is going to have to step up and play their A-game.

It's going to be a great week of volleyball and I'm really excited we're going to be coming home and playing in front of our home fans on Thursday."
