THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb women's basketball erupts in the second half and overtime periods to steal a win from Hawaii in the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter was one of run as Hawaii hit two shots from deep to take an early 6-0 lead. The Bisons would quickly answer with a 6-0 run of their own to tie things up capped off by a
Jalyn Holcomb three.
Hawaii would follow the Bisons answer with a 14-5 run the close the quarter with a 20-11 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Bisons struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first period, shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor.
Lipscomb shot much more efficiently in the second, starting the quarter on a 9-0 run with the first bucket coming on this layup from
Claira McGowan.
After tying the contest with 5:54 to go on a fast break layup from Holcomb, Lipscomb would fall into another shooting slump going 0-6 in the final 4:06 to close the quarter.
Hawaii capitalized on the Bisons shooting woes by finished the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 28-21 lead to halftime.
The momentum would shift in the third quarter as the Bisons outscored Hawaii 22-13.
Aleah Sorrentino began to take over notching 10 points in the quarter on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with three rebounds.
As a team, Lipscomb shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field including 2-of-3 from deep.
Bella Vinson and
Blythe Pearson also had productive quarter with six a piece on a combined 5-of-7 shooting, with Pearson burring a pair of triples.
The squad took a two-point lead into the fourth after trailing for entire game. Vinson continued what ended up being another career night with 9 of her 20 points coming in the fourth. Vinson was a perfect 3-of-3 and 2-of-2 from downtown.
With 23 seconds remaining the fourth, the Bisons held a 56-52 advantage after a made free throw from McGowan. Unfortunately, Hawaii fought back and eventually scored on a layup with four second left to force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Bisons forced the issue on the inside, with 8 of their 16 points coming in the painted area. They were also a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity strike as they took care of business in their final game in Hawaii in overtime 73-69.
HERD NOTES
- Aleah Sorrentino was a force inside, earning another double-double with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, and 10 boards.
- Bella Vinson had another impressive night with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting with eight rebounds.
- Jalyn Holcomb added in 12 points with six of those coming in the overtime period.
- The squad ended the game shooting 48.2 percent from the floor.
- Lipscomb dominated the painted area, outscoring Hawaii 36-22 down low.
