Women's Basketball Edged by Commodores in Overtime

Final Score: Lipscomb: 71, Vanderbilt: 72
Location: Nashville, TN. (Memorial Gymnasium)
Records:  Lipscomb: (5-6), Vanderbilt (8-5)

THE SHORT STORY:

Lipscomb mounted a massive fourth quarter comeback to force overtime, but weren't able to put in the game winner as time expired, falling narrowly, 72-71.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Commodores forced some early Lipscomb turnovers helping them get off to an 8-2 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Despite the mishaps, the Bisons managed to keep pace with the Commodores in the first half.

They cut the lead twice to one point in the quarter, but a four-point swing by Vanderbilt to close the quarter gave them a 14-9 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

After the Commodores put in the first bucket of the second quarter, the Bisons went on a 6-0 run after a steal and fastbreak score from Bella Vinson to take a 17-16 lead.

Vanderbilt halted the run with a emphatic 17-2 run to close the half with a 33-19 lead.

The Bisons kept within striking distance for the majority of the third quarter.

The squad cut the Commodores lead down to as little as six (39-33) on a three-pointer from Jalyn Holcomb

Vanderbilt answered with a quick three of their own but Ainhoa Cea managed to beat the Commodores down the floor to move their deficit to seven with 3:33 remaining in the quarter.

After two scoreless minutes, Vanderbilt closed the final minute of the quarter 6-2 to take a 11-point lead into the final quarter.

Lipscomb's fourth quarter comeback started with a three pointer from Jalyn Holcomb with 5:53 left to cut their deficit to eight.

The Bisons began to string together several stops on the defensive end, not allowing a point for four minutes.

With 32 second remaining Bella Vinson delivered again with a triple to take a two-point lead (59-57).

Vanderbilt quickly answered with a jumper just four second later to tie the game. Lipscomb had an opportunity to take the game in the final second of regulation, but were unable to convert, forcing overtime.

Lipscomb outscored Vanderbilt 22-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Commodores got off to a four-point lead after a minute of overtime action.

The teams traded baskets for the most of the overtime period.

With 13 seconds remaining in overtime, Bella Vinson put in a layup to give the squad a one-point advantage.

Needing a stop to put themselves in prime position to steal the contest, the Bisons committed a shooting foul with 9 second remaining.

The Commodores converted on the two ensuing free throws giving Lipscomb another shot at a game winner down by a point.

Unfortunately, the Bisons weren't able to convert after a Jalyn Holcomb shot attempt fell short, resulting in a heartbreaking 72-71 loss.

  • Aleah Sorrentino recorded her third triple-double of the season, scoring 21 points while bringing down 11 rebounds.
