Softball falls to Virginia in season opener at Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Lipscomb softball team opened its season Friday afternoon against Virginia in the Gamecock Invitational. The Bisons battled hard and had three runners in scoring position, but were unable to get any of those runs across the plate as UVA earned a 2-0 victory.

Freshman pitcher Makayla Veneziale made her collegiate debut in the circle and despite some early trouble, she kept a Hoos lineup in check that scored seven runs Thursday in their opener.

Amy Vetula led off the game with a 7-pitch walk for the Bisons, but after back-to-back outs, she was gunned down trying to swipe second for the final out of the first frame.

UVA took the early lead in the bottom of the inning after a single and steal from their leadoff. The Hoos brought a runner across in the next at-bat with a double in the right center gap to make it 1-0 UVA.

Over the next three innings, Lipscomb was only able to muster one base runner, which was a two-out single from Elise Shewmaker in the top of the second.

The offense had its first runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth when left fielder Maci Cunconan ripped a two-out double into center field. But that would be as far as she would get as the next batter fouled out to third base on the third pitch.

The Cavaliers struck again in the home half with a little two-out magic as back-to-back doubles put the Bisons in a 2-0 hole.

The best scoring opportunity for the purple and gold came in the sixth when Vetula, Presley Leebrick and Katelyn Belding put down three consecutive one-out singles, but Vetula was thrown out trying to score before a fielder's choice ended the scoring threat.

Veneziale (0-1) took the loss for the Bisons after working 5.0 innings, while giving up six hits, two runs and three walks with one punch out.

Aly Rayle (1-0) picked up the win for the Cavaliers, shutting out the Bisons on three hits with six strikeouts and a single walk. Mikayla Houge earned her first save of the season tossing the final 1.2 innings with two hits and a strikeout.
