Leebrick drives in seven runs, Softball drops Saturday doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C – Lipscomb softball dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader in the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina.

In the opener, the Bisons (0-3) fell 9-6 to North Carolina behind four purple and gold errors. In game two, Lipscomb took advantage of seven free passes to take an early lead, but the home-standing South Carolina Gamecocks roared back to win 12-6 behind 11 base hits.

NORTH CAROLINA 9, LIPSCOMB 6
After failing to score a run on Friday, the Bisons wasted little time in getting on the board against the Tar Heels. Presley Leebrick worked a one-out walk before advancing to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. In the next at-bat, Katelyn Belding took a full-count and pushed a ball through the left side of the infield to bring home Leebrick and give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last however, as UNC took advantage of three Bison errors in the top of the second to score three times on two hits, taking a 3-1 lead. Lipscomb got rolling again in the home half of the frame when the loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Leebrick stepped up with two outs and rocked the first pitch into center field, clearing the bases to help the purple and gold regain the lead at 4-3.

Another Lipscomb error in the third allowed UNC to score two more runs before tacking on another in the fourth and three more in the fifth to give the Tar Heels a 9-5 lead. The Bisons were able to get a final tally in the bottom of the seventh when Maci Cunconan doubled down the right field line to bring home Elise Shewmaker for the team's sixth run.

SOUTH CAROLINA 12, LIPSCOMB 6
Game two would feature 13 runs in the first two innings with three lead changes. South Carolina opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after three walks set up an RBI-single to put the Bisons in a 1-0 hole. Lipscomb returned the favor in the top of the second, as it drew three free passes to start the frame. Ashley Montoya doubled down the right field line in the next at-bat to drive in two runs before Leebrick came to plate with the bases loaded again later in the frame. The junior cleared the bases again, this time with a 3-RBI double to left to give Lipscomb a 5-1 lead.

The Gamecocks wasted no time in reclaiming the lead in the home half after eight players reached base. They would score seven runs on six hits and one Bison miscue to go back in front 8-5. After both sides went down in order in the third, Lipscomb tacked on another run in the fourth, again off the bat of Leebrick, to cut the deficit to 8-6.

USC put their first three batters on base and managed to score three more times in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of base knocks to extend the lead to 11-6. They would add a final run in the fifth on a solo home run.
