Softball closes out Gamecock Invitational with 4-1 loss to George Washington

COLUMBIA, S.C – The Lipscomb softball team wrapped up its opening weekend in the Gamecock Invitational Sunday morning with a 4-1 loss to George Washington.

The Bisons (0-4) were unable to find much production at the plate, only mustering four hits, two of which came in the final inning.

Both sides were locked in a pitching duel early on as the only baserunner through the first 2.5 innings was a leadoff walk for the Colonials in the second frame.

GWU got things going in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on four base hits, two sacrifices and one Lipscomb error.

The Bisons looked to respond in the fourth when Amy Vetula led off with a bunt single before Presley Leebrick followed with a double to center. Three batters later, Elise Shewmaker drew a walk to load the bases, but that would be where the rally stalled as a strikeout ended the inning.

After going down in order the next two innings, Lipscomb tried to mount a late rally in the seventh. Kamrie Rich led off with a single through the left side, and was replaced by Jessie Brown for a pinch runner. Brown stole her first base of the season before Maci Cunconan ripped a triple to center field, scoring Brown from second. The Bisons struck out in the next two at-bats to end the comeback.

Emily Yakubowski took her first loss of the season after tossing 4.0 innings of work. She gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out two. Freshman Kate Peters came on in relief and worked the final two innings perfectly with two punchouts. She entered the game in the fifth inning with two runners on and no outs, but was able to sit the Colonials down in order to get out of the jam.

GAME NOTES
  • Vetula, Leebrick, Rich and Cunconan registered all four hits for Lipscomb.
