Softball wins both legs of Friday doubleheader at Cougar Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. -  Lipscomb softball won two games on Friday, defeating the Holy Cross Crusaders 6-1 in the morning before coming from behind to knock off the Binghamton Bearcats 4-2 in the afternoon set at the Cougar Invitational.
 

GAME ONE: Lipscomb 6, Holy Cross 1
After a frustrating opening weekend at the Gamecock Invitational to open the season, the Bisons (2-4) wasted no time offensively on Friday. Junior left fielder Maci Cunconan ripped a 2-out single to right before coming around to score in the next at-bat on a throwing error to give Lipscomb a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons struck twice more in the top of the third frame after Amy Vetula singled and then stole second to get into scoring position. She scored batters later when Cunconan came through again with an RBI-triple to left field. Katelyn Belding then pulled a single through the left side, scoring Cuconan to make it 3-0 Bisons.

Lipscomb tacked on another run in the fifth, again with Cunconan at the plate. She singled back to the pitcher, but after a throwing error, Vetula came all the way around from second after getting on base via a four-pitch walk.

Leading 4-1, the Bisons scored their final two runs in the top of the sixth on a Joie Giarrizzo double before coming around to score later on a wild pitch.

Makayla Veneziale earned her first-career win after going the distance (7.0 IP) in the circle. She gave up five hits and one unearned run with two walks and a career high six strikeouts.

Cunconan and Belding finished with three hits each and both drove in a run, while Cunconan and Vetula each led the team with two runs scored.
 

GAME TWO: Lipscomb 4, Binghamton 2
The Bisons got run-scoring knocks from four different players and they produced all runs in the sixth inning as Lipscomb claimed a 4-2 victory over Binghamton.

Redshirt freshman Laine Barefoot tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts while earning her first-career win.

Binghamton jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a leadoff single and back-to-back wild pitches.

Lipscomb wasn't able to muster much offensively, only getting one runner into scoring position through the first five frames. But the sixth inning, it was a different story.

Vetula led off the stanza with a bunt single and then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Presley Leebrick. Cunconan then followed by lacing a triple into center, bringing home Vetula to tie the game. Belding then hit an RBI single through the left side to give the Bisons their first lead.

Erin Shewmaker then ripped a triple to right center to plate Belding before Kaitlyn Woodside sent a pinch-hit single through the right side for the fourth consecutive single to give Lipscomb a 4-1 lead.

The Bearcats cut into the lead in the seventh with a RBI single, but Barefoot recorded three straight outs to end the game.

Six different Bisons earned base hits, led by Vetula's two knocks.


UP NEXT
Lipscomb is back in action for two more games on Saturday to close out play in Charleston. The Bisons will take on Binghamton again at 8:30 a.m. CT before battling Valparaiso at 4 p.m.
