Women’s Tennis Splits Weekend Contests with Murray State and Georgia State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. / ATLANTA, Ga. – Lipscomb women's tennis collected pair of split results over their weekend of competitions. The Bisons earned a 4-3 victory in a tight battle with Murray State on Friday and fell 0-4 to Georgia State on Sunday.

Friday's match began with Murray State claiming the doubles point after they earned victories on courts one and two. Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik represented the Bisons at the No. 1 position where they fell 4-6 to their Recer opponents while Liza Diachenko and Sasha Dobranos faced off with their challengers on court two before ultimately falling 3-6.

The Bisons made a comeback with their singles play, led by Sasha Dobranos at the No. 1 position with a two-set victory for the first singles point (6-1, 6-1). Senior Kate Popova ultimately earned the clinch point for the Bisons as the fifth singles match to end in a three-set thriller (5-6, 7-2, 7-5).

The squad headed to Atlanta, Ga. on Sunday to face Georgia State in their rescheduled match from February 5th. The Bisons put up a fight but were ultimately defeated 0-4 by the Panthers.

Doubles play saw the Panthers take the point with tight matches on courts one and two. Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik represented Lipscomb at the No. 1 position (4-6), while Maddox Bandy and Sasha Dobranos partnered on court two, challenging their Panther opponents before ultimately falling 5-7.

The Panthers continued their strong play in the singles matches, collecting victories on courts four, two, and three to secure the match.

Four of the Bisons took their Panther opponents to three sets before the match ended. Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik were two such Bisons, logging scores of 0-6, 6-0, 0-6 and 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 before their opponents claimed the match points.

Sasha Dobranos battled with her opponent on court one at 6-4, 4-6, ending set three in a 3-3 draw while Eleanor Chapman was similarly drawn to a halt in set three after going 2-6, 6-3 with an unfinished set three score of 2-5 at the end of the match.

The Bisons will next face local foe Belmont on Saturday, February 19 at 3:00 PM. They will follow up against UAB on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3:00 PM.
