Bisons stumble in second half against ASUN leader Jacksonville State

NASHVILLE – Coming off a big win over Eastern Kentucky last weekend, Lipscomb was unable to capitalize on its momentum as the Bisons let a second half lead slip away against ASUN West Division leader Jacksonville State as the Gamecocks earned a 78-67 win Wednesday night in Allen Arena.

Lipscomb (11-17, 4-9) led by as many as six in the second half and for more almost 11 minutes before the visiting Gamecocks rallied after the Bisons went cold from the floor. The win secured JSU (17-9, 10-3) a first-round bye in the ASUN Championship, securing them at least a top-2 seed in the division.

Senior Parker Hazen and freshman Will Pruitt led the way offensively for the Bisons with 17 points each. Both also grabbed five rebounds. Tommy Murr finished with 14 in 31 minutes off the bench. Ahsan Asadullah recorded 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds and five assists, but it wasn't enough as Lipscomb was outrebounded 34-29 and outscored 32-22 in the paint.

The Bisons started ice cold from the field, falling behind by nine points in the first five minutes (13-4) after starting 1-of-8 from the floor. But the next two trips down the floor, Pruitt and Greg Jones connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a run of six consecutive shots made for the purple and gold.

Lipscomb rode the hot stretch and eventually pulled even with JSU on two occasions, but the Gamecocks were able to extend their lead back to seven under the eight-minute mark.

Both offenses got rolling and the Bisons closed the half hitting 7 of their last 10 shots to send the game into the break tied at 41. Lipscomb shot 51.7 percent in the half, while JSU shot 57.1 and the teams combined for 13 triples.

The purple and gold rode a fast start after halftime when Hazen hit a three and added another layup less than two minutes in to put Lipscomb up 48-43. After another Hazen triple, Murr took a pass away from JSU and on the fast break, gave the ball up to a streaking Greg Jones who finished a tough and-one to give the BIsons their largest lead of the night at 55-49 with 14:49 to play.

That would be just about all Lipscomb's offense would muster as they went the final 14 minutes just 3-of-18 from the floor. Murr buried a 3-pointer at the 12-minute mark, before Hazen made a layup at 7:57. They went the next seven minutes without a field goal until Murr's layup with 47 seconds left to play.

Despite the struggles, the BIsons only found themselves down six, but an 18-5 JSU run to close out the game ended any comeback threat from the home team.
