THE SHORT STORY:  Lipscomb fell to Pittsburgh 6-5 after a late home run sealed the win for the Panthers after a tightly contested matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Ike Buxton and the Lipscomb defense kept Pitt off the board in the first inning, the Bisons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Maddux Houghton led off the inning reaching when he was hit by a pitch. Trace Willhoite got the first Lipscomb hit of the game later in the inning with a double to center field to put two in scoring position with one out. The runs came when Houghton scored on a wild pitch and Rudy Maxwell batted in Willhoite for a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers got both runs back in the top of the second with a two-run home run to tie it up. Lipscomb threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the inning with two on, but both were stranded.

Pittsburgh quickly took over the lead in the top of the third with a leadoff home run and added an unearned run in the top of the fourth for a 4-2 advantage.

Lipscomb began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally. Houghton delivered a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch to get himself in scoring position. Mason Lundgrin stepped up and notched a single through the right side that scored Houghton to shave the Pitt lead 4-3.

The Bisons tied things up in the bottom of the fifth after Williams knocked a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chaz Bertolani singled up the middle with one out and Williams crossed home plate for a 4-4 game after five complete innings.

Matthew Bohnert kept Pitt at bay in the top of the sixth, retiring the Panthers in order, giving the Bisons the opportunity to pull ahead in the home half of the inning.

After earning a leadoff walk and advancing to third on a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt, John Shields scored the go-ahead run when Houghton put a ball straight up the middle for a 5-4 Lipscomb lead.

Bohnert continued to cruise in the top of the seventh, retiring Pitt in order for the second-consecutive inning.

Trey Nordmann took over on the mound for the Bisons in the top of the eighth with a narrow lead. With two outs, the Panthers took advantage of a wild pitch and scored to tie things 5-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Pitt changed the game with one swing of the bat with a leadoff home run to put themselves ahead 6-5 in the top of the ninth. The Bisons were unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth and ultimately fell 6-5 in a tightly contested game.
