Women’s Tennis Notches 6-1 Win Over Villanova Wildcats in Home Opener

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb's women's tennis program opened their outdoor season in a matinee home opener against Villanova Tuesday afternoon. The Bisons sent the Wildcats packing in a decisive 6-1 win to notch their first outdoor victory of the season.

"It was great to kick off the season at home with so much love and support. I tell all our recruits that Lipscomb is a special place because of how much people truly care," said head coach Jamie Aid. "I want to say a huge thank you to our community for helping our girls post a 6-1 win today. "

The Bisons started out strong with fast-paced doubles play from all three courts.

The first duo to finish was that of Maddox Bandy and Sasha Dobranos at the No. 2 position (6-2). Their momentum helped Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik to clinch the doubles point for Lipscomb with a 7-5 victory on court one following a tight battle with their Villanova foes.

Perri Howard and Eleanor Chapman traded points with their Wildcat opponents before their match went unfinished at 5-5 when the Bisons secured the point.

"We were glad to finally win a doubles point," Aid said. "We have been working hard on doubles because it has been a weakness in recent matches."

The Bisons opened singles play with a quick victory from Sasha Dobranos as she put away her adversary on court one in two sets (6-2, 6-2).

The Wildcats struck back with a point at the No. 4 position where Villanova's Caitlin Fisher bested Anja Trbeznik 6-2, 6-3 to earn the Wildcats' lone point of the match.

The Bisons responded to Fisher's point with a 6-4, 6-4 win from Maddox Bandy on court six and a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win from graduate student Kate Popova on court one.

The squad wasn't done yet; however, as Emma Zakordoniec fought hard for a three-set victory (7-5, 3-6, 10-7) at the No. 3 position to put the Bisons up 5-1.

Liza Diachenko brought home the final point of the match for the Bisons, going 7-5, 7-5 against her Wildcat opponent at the No. 5 position to close the match and secure the Bisons' 6-1 victory.

"I was happy with the level of play today and we're looking forward to the weekend," said Aid. "Memphis just beat #13 Tulsa and then we face a good Miami of Ohio on Saturday as well."
