Game Recap: Softball |

Softball falls in Lady Bison Classic doubleheader

NASHVILLE – It was a quiet afternoon at the plate for Lipscomb softball's bats as the Bisons fell to Bowling Green State and Houston Baptist to open the Lady Bison Classic on Friday at Draper Diamond.

The purple and gold (7-14) combined for six hits and struck out 25 times between the two contests as BGSU blanked the Bisons 5-0 in game one, while the Huskies used an early three-run lead to get a 9-4 victory in the final game of the day.

GAME ONE
Bowling Green's Payton Gottshall stole the show and shut the Bisons down early in the afternoon affair as the sophomore tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth frame before Presley Leebrick broke it up with an infield single to short that she beat out.

Pinch-hitter Jessie Brown led off the seven with a single to left, but she was left stranded as the Bisons had no answer for Gottshall. The only other baserunners for Lipscomb in the game was Maci Cunconan and Kaitlynn Hunt with a pair of walks.

The Falcons scored a run in the top of the first and added a pair in the fifth and seventh frames to get the 5-0 win.

Laine Barefoot worked the full 7.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 114 pitches. She dropped to 3-4 with the defeat.

GAME TWO
The struggle continued early in game two as the temperatures continued to drop.  Houston Baptist blasted a 3-run shot over the fence in left to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Bisons, however, were able to scratch a run across in the home half after back-to-back walks from Amy Vetula and Leebrick. Then, after advancing on a wild pitch, Vetula scored on an errant throw from the catcher trying to get her at third.

HBU tacked on two more in the second on a double to center, extending its lead to 5-1. The Bisons continued to work counts and drew two more free passes before a single from Vetula loaded the bases, but a ground ball to the pitcher ended the threat.

In the bottom of the third, Meghan Kline pushed across a run on a fielder's choice to cut it to 5-2. But every time Lipscomb trimmed its deficit, the Huskies pounced. They recorded three doubles in the first four batters of the fourth to score twice more and push the advantage out to 7-2.

Vetula singled with one out in the home half and came around to score in the next at-bat on a throwing error from HBU's third baseman, making it 7-3.

The Bisons added their final run in the fifth when Kamrie Rich launched a deep shot over the fence in right center to lead off the inning, her second home run of the year.

Lipscomb loaded the bases again in the sixth but another infield ground ball ended the threat and its chances of a comeback.

Freshman Kate Peters got the start in the circle, but lasted just 1.2 innings after allowing four earned runs on three hits. Emily Yakubowski came on in relief and continued to pitch well. She worked the final 5.1 frames and allowed four runs on seven hits, but recorded a career high 10 strikeouts.

Vetula and Leebrick each collected two hits on the day, while Rich and Brown had the other two.

The Bisons did draw 13 walks, 11 of them against Houston Baptist.
