Softball smashes its way to a 10-8 win over Houston Baptist

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb softball pounced early on the Houston Baptist Huskies and rode that lead to a 10-8 victory to close out the Lady Bison Classic Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond.

The Bisons had nine players record a base hit and five that drove in a run, while pitcher Laine Barefoot tossed a complete game as they improved to 8-14 on the season.

After retiring HBU (10-11) in order to start off the game, Lipscomb's offense didn't take long to find its rhythm. Amy Vetula and Presley Leebrick drew a pair of walks to leadoff the bottom of the first, then Maci Cunconan sent a double to right field to bring home both for a 2-0 lead. Later in the frame, Joie Giarrizzo worked the fifth free pass of the frame to move the score to 3-0.

In the bottom of the second stanza, Cunconan came through again with her second double in as many at-bats, driving in Leebrick who legged out an infield single to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, after Barefoot had retired nine batters in a row, HBU was able to get on the board with a walk and three-consecutive knocks, the last being a 3-RBI triple to left center.

However, in the bottom of the inning, the Bisons got one of those tallies back when Vetula crossed the dish on a ground ball from Kamrie Rich, extending the advantage to 5-3.

After scoring runs in three of the first four innings, the Bisons looked primed for a big inning. That came in the fifth when they doubled their run total with five runs on five hits.

Giarrizzo recorded a RBI-triple to the wall in right center. Vetula also had an RBI-single to right center, before Rich took the same gap for a 2-RBI double. The last run came when pinch-hitter Jessie Brown slapped a ball through the left side to score Rich, increasing Lipscomb's lead to 10-3.

Nearing the end of her tank, Barefoot went out for the seventh and looked to close out the complete game. It didn't go quite as planned, but she was able to get out of the frame with her fourth win of the season, despite HBU getting four hits and two home runs after the inning was extended on a fielding error.
