Rich leads charge as Bisons give No. 2 Florida State scare

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb softball pushed No. 2 Florida State to the bring Tuesday afternoon at Draper Diamond, but the Seminoles held off a late push from the Bisons to win 5-3.

The highest-ranked team to ever visit Draper, Florida State (24-1) got some help in the first inning from a pair of Lipscomb miscues to put up a three-spot.

On the second at-bat of the game, the Bisons got a routine ground ball to third base, but were unable to keep a foot on the bag at second base while trying to get the lead runner. If that out had been made, Lipscomb's freshman hurler Kate Peters went on to get a strikeout and another groundball out, which would have ended the inning. However, with one out to go, the Seminoles laced a 2-RBI single down the third base line and then singled through the right side on the next at-bat to bring across another run and take a 3-0 lead. All three runs were unearned.

A leadoff walk in the top of the second inning came back to haunt the Bisons as two batters later a double down the left field line made it 4-0 FSU.

Lipscomb got a single runner on base in each of the first two innings, but were unable to do anything with it. But when the third frame came, they struck gold.

Kelly Paulson singled to left to lead off the stanza before advancing on a wild pitch and then again on a ground ball out from Amy Vetula. In the next at-bat, Presley Leebrick dropped a single into shallow left center to drive in the first purple and gold run.

Two batters later, catcher Kamrie Rich got a hold of a 2-1 pitch and blasted it over the fence in left center for a 2-run home run, her third of the season, to bring Lipscomb to within 4-3 after three.

The second-ranked Noles didn't waste any time in getting one of those tallies back, however, as they led off the fourth with a solo homer, extending the score to 5-3.

The Bisons managed just one base runner over the final four innings as Leebrick recorded a two-out knock in the fifth.

Redshirt freshman Mariyn Waterman came on in relief after working just three innings in one appearance this season. She entered after the leadoff homer and immediately gave up a single down the line in right, but from there on, she was lights out.

Waterman retired 11 straight batters after the single and faced the minimum 12 batters on 51 pitches. She struck out two and kept the Seminoles off balance the rest of the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Rich smashed her team-leading third homer of the year.
