Veneziale strikes out career-high 10 in shutout of Quinnipiac

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb softball's Makayla Veneziale dazzled in the circle and the offense came alive late as the Bisons shutout Quinnipiac 6-0 Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond in the final tuneup before conference play begins.

Veneziale pitched the best game of her career against the Bobcats, working the full 7.0 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts with only two hits allowed and two walks. It was her first-career shutout as the freshman improved to 2-4 on the year.

Junior left fielder Maci Cunconan got the party started with a 2-out solo shot in the bottom of the first inning, her third dinger of the season.

The Bisons (9-15) could not muster much else at the plate on a rainy day at Draper until Tori Womack doubled the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The freshman was called upon to pinch-hit and facing a 1-1 count, she blasted a deep shot over the fence in center, extending the Bisons lead to 2-0.

With the game still hanging in the balance, the purple and gold made sure to eliminate any thought of a Bobcat comeback in the sixth frame. Presley Leebrick led off with a walk, and Cunconan singled to center in the next at-bat. Then after two quick outs, pinch-hitter Elise Shewmaker worked a full count before getting pinged to load the bases.

Center fielder Joie Giarrizzo backed her up with a 2-RBI single that squirted underneath the glove of an outstretched Bobcat at second base. Giarrizzo stole second to put two runners into scoring position before a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, scoring Shewmaker. Then third baseman Kaitlynn Hunt drilled a full-count pitch into left center for an RBI-single to give Lipscomb a 6-0 advantage.

Veneziale came back out in the seventh inning and worked around a one-out walk to shut the door and send the Bisons to Florida with momentum.
