THE SHORT STORY: Lipscomb Baseball was unable to overcome an early deficit and ultimately fell 5-1 to crosstown rival Belmont Wednesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field
HOW IT HAPPENED
Belmont got out to an early lead in the top of the first with a solo home run for an early 1-0 advantage. The Bisons threatened to counter in the bottom of the inning when
John Shields started things off with a single and
Maddux Houghton reached when he was hit by a pitch for a pair of base runners. The runners would both get into scoring position with a double steal, but they were stranded as Belmont kept the lead.
The Belmont offense continued to produce with a pair of runs in the top of the second and a run in the top of the third for a quick 4-0 lead.
Lipscomb had a chance to get things going in the bottom of the fourth when
Rudy Maxwell led off with a single but was thrown out trying to steal second and the Bisons were without any base runners.
Mason Lundgrin worked a two-out walk, but he was also stranded as the Bruins maintained the lead.
Patrick Williams came to the mound in the top of the fifth and retired Belmont in order with two strikeouts, keeping Lipscomb in striking distance.
Belmont would add its final run in the top of the sixth with another solo home run over the left field fence for a 5-0 lead.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bisons mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with an error, hit and a walk. With the bases juiced, a Bruins balk gave Lipscomb one run back, but closer Kyle Brennan got the final two outs as Belmont secured the 5-1 victory.
