Rich smashes two home runs to lead softball in rubber match over FGCU

NASHVILLE – Behind Kamrie Rich, Lipscomb softball slugged its way to its first ASUN Conference series victory of the year after knocking off Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1, Sunday afternoon on a sun-drenched Draper Diamond.

Rich powered the offense with two 2-run homers and Kate Peters tossed a complete game from the circle to give the Bisons a rubber-match victory, improving them to 13-18 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Rich put the purple and gold on the board in the bottom of the first when she cranked a mammoth 2-run shot over the fence in left and into the street. Amy Vetula, who reached on a fielding error to lead off the frame, came around to score to make it 2-0 Bisons.

FGCU cut into the lead with a solo homer in the top of the third with two outs, making it 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Lipscomb didn't waste time in getting that run back and more. Vetula singled to left center with one out and then advanced to second base on a fielder's choice error from the Eagles. After Rich walked to load the bases, Elise Shewmaker smoked a ball over the right fielder's head, driving in Vetula and Presley Leebrick to make it a 4-1 game.

The Bisons made sure the game was out of reach in the fifth stanza when Kyndall Crawford was inserted and came through with a single to right field. Rich then blasted an opposite field shot over the fence in right for her second 2-run homer of the day, giving Lipscomb a 6-1 lead.

From that point, it was up to Peters to shut the door and that's exactly what she did. The freshman hurler tossed all 7.0 innings, while giving up just one run on three hits. She did walk three, but struck out a pair to improve to 5-4 in her young career.

GAME NOTES
  • Rich finished the day 2-for-2 with two home runs, two runs scored and a season high four RBI. She now has 10 RBI in her last five games.
  • Vetula scored two runs and recorded a team-high five putouts in the field.
  • Six different Bisons recorded a base hit, while four scored a run.
  • Peters has allowed three or fewer base hits in her last six outings and has giving up just three earned runs in that stretch.
