Cunconan homers, but the Bisons fall to No. 11 Tennessee on Rocky Top

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb softball team ventured in SEC country Wednesday evening for a nonconference matchup and came away with a 6-2 loss at the hands of the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteer on Rocky Top.

In the top of the first, the Bisons were able to get their first baserunner of the game when Jessie Brown reached on a Tennessee fielding error, but a fly out and a strikeout ended any threat of scoring.

In the bottom half, the Vols were able to take advantage of back-to-back walks and a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead.

That lead didn't last long, however, for the No. 11 ranked Vols as Elise Shewmaker was plunked on a 1-1 count to lead off the frame. Junior Maci Cunconan then worked a full count before blasting a 2-run bomb over the center field wall to put Lipscomb on top 2-1.

UT evened things back up in the bottom of the inning with two outs when McKenna Gibson sent a solo shot off the top of the scoreboard in left.

The Vols continued that momentum in the third frame with back-to-back solo homers to lead off the frame before a single and a double following a pitching change led to three more runs and a 5-2 advantage for the orange and white.

Tennessee tacked on another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth on a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to extend its advantage to 9-2. The Vols then scored in the game-winning run in the sixth inning
Laine Barefoot (4-6) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks in 2.0 innings.
