THE SHORT STORY: An eighth-inning rally and walk-off single vaulted Lipscomb Baseball to an 8-7 victory over Northern Illinois University Saturday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Northern Illinois was on the offensive from the jump, working a pair of walks to start the game. The leadoff run came around and scored on a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 lead. The Huskies built on its lead in the top of the second with a two-out solo home run
After being held scoreless for the first three innings, the Lipscomb offense finally got things going in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally.
Maddux Houghton,
Malik Williams,
Rudy Maxwell and
Mason Lundgrin all had hits in the inning. After infield singles by Houghton and Williams, Maxwell and Lundgrin delivered back-to-back RBI singles to tie things 2-2 after four complete innings.
NIU, however, immediately responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth and an unearned run in the top of the sixth to retake a 5-2 lead.
Lipscomb was in good position to score in the bottom of the sixth with consecutive walks to start the inning, but a double play and ground ball quickly ended the inning and kept the Bisons behind by three.
The Bisons continued to be plagued by errors, commiting its sixth of the night in the top of the eighth to allow another unearned run to fall to a 6-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the inning.
For the second-consecutive game, the Bisons used a big eighth inning to get back into the game. After a leadoff walk and Houghton single, both runners scored when Williams singled up the middle to shave the NIU lead 6-4. The Lipscomb offensive flurry continued with a Lundgrin single up the middle to drive in Williams. The tying run came when
Ethan Stamps laced a double to left center field that allowed Lundgrin to cross home plate. The Bisons weren't done as
August Haymaker put a hit to center field that scored Stamps for a 7-6 lead heading into the ninth.
The Huskies, however, tied things back up in the top of the ninth to send the top of the order up for the Bisons.
Leadoff man,
John Shields put the winning run aboard when he beat out an infield single for his first hit of the afternoon.
Trace Willhoite put another aboard when he worked a walk. Down to the Bisons' final out, Maxwell stepped up to the plate with the winning run 90-feet from home plate. Maxwell singled through the right side to score the winning run and give the Bisons the 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon.
HERD NOTES
- Lundgrin went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Williams, Maxwell and Haymaker also had multi-hit games.
- Nordmann picked up his first win of the season.
- Shields and Williams both scored two runs.
