THE SHORT STORY

Lipscomb Baseball used an 18-hit offensive explosion to win its fourth-straight game, defeating Ausin Peay on the road 10-6 Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Bisons were retired in order in the top of the first, Michael Dunkelberger got off to a good start in his second start of the season. APSU got one hit in the bottom of the first, but a pair of strikeouts got Dunkelberger out of the inning unscathed.

Lipscomb did some damage in the top of the second when Malik Williams led off with a walk. Rudy Maxwell followed that up with a first-pitch home run over the left field fence to give Lipscomb a 2-0 run heading into the home half of the inning. Dunkelberger continued his strong work on the mound, retiring the Govs in order, keeping the Bisons in the lead.

After a scoreless third, Austin Peay cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. After a single and double with no outs, the Govs threatened to tie things, but Dunkelberger got a couple ground balls and a strikeout to keep APSU to just a run.

The Bisons responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Caleb Ketchup used his speed to beat out a throw for an infield single, giving Lipscomb an early base runner. John Shields followed with a shallow double, putting two in scoring position with no outs. Trace Willhoite took advantage and delivered a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 Lipscomb lead. The final run of the inning cam when Williams singled up the middle, scoring Shields, pushing the Bisons out to a 4-1 lead.

Hot offense continued for Lipscomb in the top of the sixth when Mason Lundgrin and Ethan Stamps delivered back-to-back base knocks. After a sacrifice bunt pushed both runners to scoring position, Ketchup delivered a perfect sacrifice bunt to score another run, giving Lipscomb a 5-1 lead through the home half of the sixth.

Matthew Maldonado took over in relief for Dunkelberger in the bottom of the sixth. The Govs were able to tighten things up with a pair of runs. Gavin Grubbs entered the game on the hill for the Bisons with a runner on and two outs and got a three-pitch out to keep the Lipscomb advantage 5-3.

Lipscomb got both runs back in the top of the seventh using four-straight base hits and a sacrifice fly to jump out to a 7-3 lead. Matthew Bohnert took over the mound in relief for the bottom of the seventh and recorded a quick three up, three down inning.

Shields delivered his second double of the night to leadoff the top of the eighth. He scored when Williams connected on his fourth hit of the night for an 8-0 lead. After Maxwell singled to left field, the bases were juiced for Mason Lundgrin. He worked a walk to push another run across home plate for a 9-3 advantage.

The Governors made things interesting with a three-run bottom of the eighth to shave the Lipscomb lead 9-6.

Keeping with the trend, Lipscomb once again responded with a run in the bottom of the ninth when Chaz Bertolani came around and scored the Bisons' 10th run of the night.

John Cheatwood, who got the final out in the bottom of the eighth, stayed on the mound for the bottom of the ninth and put the game away for his first save of the season.
