THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball cruised to a 7-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep and win its seventh-straight ASUN game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ike Buxton got the starting nod on Sunday and after a shaky start, walking the first two he saw, he locked in and got out of the inning unscathed. Lipscomb jumped on the Colonels starting pitcher and scored two in the home half of the first frame.
Caleb Ketchup led things off with a walk and advanced to third when
Maddux Houghton singled through the left side. Ketchup took advantage of a wild pitch to score and Houghton eventually scored when the EKU second baseman muffed a ground ball to take a 2-0 lead.
After another scoreless inning for Buxton, the Bisons' bats stayed hot as
John Shields led off with a double and stole third base. He scored on a beautiful squeeze play for a 3-0 lead. After
Chaz Bertolani and Caleb reached base on the squeeze play and a walk,
Mason Lundgrin cleared the bases with a double to right field for a quick 5-0 lead after two complete innings.
The third and fourth innings were scoreless, but Lipscomb tacked on a run each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, putting the game out of reach. Shields once again reached base by way of a walk in the fifth inning and swiped his second bag of the day to get in scoring position. He later scored when Ketchup singled to right field for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Lundgrin notched his second extra-base hit of the afternoon with a one-out double. Lundgrin scored when
Malik Williams drove him in with a base knock to center field, rounding out Lipscomb's scoring and extending its advantage 7-0.
Buxton worked through six shutout innings, allowing just two hits. EKU was finally able to get on the board in the top of the ninth with a pair of home runs off of the Lipscomb bullpen, but
Matthew Bohnert came in and quickly got the final two outs of the game by way of strikeout to seal the 7-3 victory.
